MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Feb 11, 2009 Thanks to TheEpeeist for picking me up a bottle in his Chicago trip.
Deep brown pour with a huge, gushing head. Nearly opaque in glass. Aroma of cereal, nuts, attic dust and molasses. Very dry taste. Dry, dusty, earthy finish. This doesn’t really strike me as a traditional brown. It’s kind of close to the duck-rabbit brown. hellbilly (1502), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Feb 9, 2009 thanks to psprings for sharing this... pours a dark cola brown color with a small head which needed some help to get going. very rich aroma of chocolate, coffee nuttiness, a light lactic sourness, ash, caramel, earth (which i now know is the oats) and nearly metallic maltiness (metal dissipates). the flavor caught me off guard and i had to keep checking the label to make sure this wasn’t listed as an old timey porter... chocolate, ample amounts of roasty coffee, brown sugar, chocolate, ash, a touch of sourness similar to coffee and a plethora of floral hops on the finish which linger into the aftertaste to mix with coffee. the medium body leans on full but is in no way sweet or sticky. it’s very smooth and creamy yet a nice balance is made from ash and roasty bitterness. there’s something very familiar and comforting in this brew...8/4/8/5/18/4.3 nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jan 16, 2009 650 ml, thanks to General Gao. Opaque chestnut with a small, enduring film of cream. Light aroma is cocoa, coffee and dry oats. Tastes of molasses, cocoa, lightly soured cream, and berries. Finish is sweetish coffee, dark toasted nut and dry oats. Medium-heavy body is smooth with light carbonation. Slightly sticky and roasty dry on the finish. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Dec 15, 2008 Sample at Flossmoor Station. Pours medium brown with no head. Aroma is coffee with a touch of caramel and nuts. Flavor is mostly coffee with a hazelnut-like sweetness. Good beer, second only to Big Black Pumpkin this evening. BeerBunker (607), Burbank, Illinois, USA Dec 13, 2008 Pours dark brown with a huge tan head. The head never fully dissipates, leaving some copious lacing. Aroma is malt, nuts, coffee, grain, and maple. Taste is of nutty malt, maple, grain, and brown sugar. Has a heavy, lingering coffee bite. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. Borders more on porter than brown ale. Very good.
