adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 11, 2008 22 oz bomber. Pours a very dark brown cola with a medium sized light brown head. Aroma of light molasses, cola and malt. Taste of light fizzy molasses, cola and nuts. WeeHeavySD (2940), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Dec 11, 2008 Rating 111, Bomber via trade with BBB63, thanks Mike for another great beer. Tons of foam on the pour, had to let settle. Nose is huge like the foam. Pours brown with a wonderful head. Nose is great, with big notes of molasses, brown sugar and sweet malts. Taste is sweet and sticky with a lot of flavor. Its always nice to find an exceptional brown, because in my opinion it is a style that is usually very flawed. This is very nice, very rich and incredibly smooth. ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Nov 28, 2008 Updated: Sep 14, 2009Tap at the Station. This may be the best brown ale ever brewed. Black as a train plume, thicker than Oil! Nutty, molassesy, caramelized, darkly sweet. Not at all thin, grainy or secretly a porter. Blow the whistle! And keep on blowin’! WOO-WOOOO!!! DSG (1501), Tel Aviv, Israel Nov 28, 2008 (10/14/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Flossmoor. Very dark brown to black color with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, some dark fruits and coffee notes. Sweet malty flavor with roastiness, nutty notes, some coffee and caramel. Medium to full-bodied. Nice stuff. kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 20, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a nice creamy one finger tight bubbled head. Very nutty nose, a little husky, cocoa powder, cereal grains, and light roast coffee. Pretty sweet flavor, lots of hazelnut and cocoa powder, with a little bit of yeast. Very husky and nutty on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with that slightly course grainy feel to it. Overall, pretty nice beer, though a little too grainy. I could go for a little bit more creaminess. daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Nov 15, 2008 bottle from guyinchicago, and wow! This is my favorite brown ale of all time I do believe. the aroma is just full of nuts, chocolate, oats, molasses and some slighty boozy notes. Flavor is just so smooth and rich. Nutty, cocoa, faint hops and great malts dance all together to make a great party on the tongue. Wow. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Oct 27, 2008 Tap at the brewpub. Second best beer I had on my Chicago trip. Came as a complete surprise, too. No one expects much from a Brown, but this one came through with swirling colors, or whatever the hell that expression is. Awesome aroma, loaded with peanut butter, cashew, and really creamy chocolate. A ton of hazelnut too. Flavor is just as rich with just a touch of hop in the finish to keep it from being cloying. Very solid. Reminds me of Rogue Hazelnut Brown but is not as dominated by the adjunct. Lovely. Beerlando (2283), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 21, 2008 Bomber. Pours a really dark mahogany color. A small but lasting, frothy, coffee colored head leaves wet, spotty lacing behind. Aromas include bittersweet chocolate and dark molasses, with notes of hazelnuts and vanilla oatmeal. Hints of pipe tobacco come and go, as do notes of dark fruit and cinnamon. Flavors fall in line for the most part, rich cocoa and smoky-sweet molasses laying the groundwork. Roasty espresso notes are soothed by silky vanilla and hazelnut. The palate is medium-full and smooth, but a little on the sweet and sticky side, causing it to drink a bit heavier than the 6% ABV indicates. Overall, this is a mighty solid nut brown that pretty much doubles as an oatmeal porter. It’s an interesting and well executed take on the style.
