notalush (2628), Denver, Colorado, USA Oct 10, 2008 Thanks to valpoaj for sending this my way - pours more like a porter than a brown ale - dark ruby, nearly black, with a tan, two-finger head, that settles to a small film and lace - the aroma is fairly sweet, with a lot of maple and molasses - the toasted oats are apparent, and give a slightly roasty quality to the aroma as well - the roasty character is more pronounced in the flavor, and lends some coffee bitterness and an almost tobacco-ish leafy quality as well - the molasses’ sweetness swells up from under that, and becomes quite prominent, almost too much so - a bit of maple, caramel, and a bit of nutty character - caramelized sugars and toffee in the finish - this is a bit too sweet, but a tasty brown ale none-the-less. Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 8, 2008 Objectively speaking:
Tasty and rather full-bodied brown ale.
I like:
Original example with strong maple notes. Effective roastiness manages to attenuate the excessive sweetness. Distinctive and relatively intense. Controlled hoppiness compared to most of their other ales.
I dislike:
Certainly sweeter than most, its flavours almost reach a molasses territory. I’d prefer further developments in the toasty scope. Not particularly complex. The high scores struck me as a surprise compared to the 2.7-2.8 their other regulars gather.
gearbike (413), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA Sep 30, 2008 Dark brow. Creamy look and taste. Equal combination of nut, chocolate and sweetness make a rather rich creamy brew. Tasty but not outstanding. HonkeyBra (1279), Lemont, Illinois, USA Sep 28, 2008 I was really impressed by this ale. Pours brown, with a sweet roasty aroma. Flavor is smooth and smokey. A lot of roastiness, but also some nuts. Great mouthfeel. Easily one of the best Brown ales i’ve ever had. grandridge (222), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Sep 27, 2008 Bomber, pours dark brown with aroma of caramel and smoke. Flavor is sweet and smooth. Caramel dominates but some smoke and chocolate. Nice malty, nutty flavor. You can really taste the oats in there. One of the best browns I’ve had. Flossmoor does it again. KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 21, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin, light tan head. Nutty aroma with hints of roasted oats. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is quite a suprise. Roasted malt, nuts, chocolate all blend perfectly. Finish is slightly bitter and dry. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 17, 2008 [22oz bottle] I love this beer! Pours dark brown near black with a lovely sand colored head. Nutty vinous aroma with a touch of roast and sweet molasses. Flavor follows... nutty and vinous with some coffee and molasses. Finishes a bit tart. So drinkable and tasty! jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 9, 2008 Dark brown with light, foamy cappuccino head / Rich nose of roast coffee, chocolate and nuts / Light to medium body, a touch watery and thin on the finish / Tart, somewhat astringent flavors of bitter coffee, roast barley, and bittersweet chocolate / Has potential, but needs work.
