Tasted on draft at Flossmoor Station’s Pre-DLD party, 2011. Pours opaque dark brown with a medium tan head that leaves a thin, spotty lace. The nose is raspberry jam, with vanilla, caramel, lightly roasted coffee, and dark chocolate. The flavor is sweet raspberry jam, and even more roasted than the nose, with vanilla, caramel, and intensely bitter coffee. The body is full with very lively carbonation, and a long, caramel, vanilla, raspberry jam, and bitter coffee finish.

Tap at the Pre-DLD event at Flossmoor Station. Pours a hazy dark brown color with a small, darkish tan head. Nice aroma of raspberries, caramel, vanilla, oak, light bourbon, roasted malts, and coffee. Flavor of raspberries, vitamin-like iron, bourbon, coffee, toasted brown sugar, oak, and rust. Medium-bodied, with a mouthfeel that was both tart and iron-like but also roasty. I really liked the promise of the nose but the flavor was hurt by the out-of-balance mouthfeel that reminded me of chewable vitamins.

Draft on tap at Black Friday Event (Flossmoor, IL). Pours a nice dark brownish black pour, with a good haziness, touches of lighter brown on the bottom. A moderate frothy darker brown head that laces small, dies to a film. Aromas are deep and dark sweet malts, cocoa and molasses, brown sugar, biscuits and toffee. Moving into touches of wet oak, vanilla, and some chocolate chip cookies. A faint touch of raspberries, tannins and faint tartness. Initial is fuller bodied, with toffee, chocolate, touches of coffee, molasses, with some touches of rich spirit Bourbon, vanilla, cocoa. Sweet, with touches of raspberry cocoa truffles, some wet sweet raspberry syrup, not tart. Some sweet raspberry, tannins. Raspberry chocolates, a little thinned out with some coffee and roast sneaking in. Lingering roast, coffee cake, and cocoa. Touches of Bourbon. Wet oak, vanilla, light notes of tart and sweet raspberry, dries up a touch. Not bad, a little better than the non-raspberry. Raspberry is a little sweet. Maybe a touch medicinal if you stretch.
