3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 DrnkMcDermott (2444) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - JUL 24, 2009
22 oz. bottle. $9.50 at Sam’s this week. Don’t know if the wax is actually navy blue, but the bottle does show Brian Shimkos as brewmaster, so I’m sure this is this beer. Pours a darker brown than the average IPA, with a rocky, lacy head. Deep down smell of citrusy (Amarillo?) hops, plus a bit of malt syrup and rye spice. But no syrup in the taste, that’s for sure. This is not quite an imperial strength IPA, so the hops don’t have to fight with malts. Spicy character from rye in the malt, but also, I think, from some noble hops in the mix. Lot of caramel roast without overdone sweetness, which goes well. I was actually in the mood for a sticky hop bomb. This wasn’t one, but it makes a great impression by itself.

on tap at the brewpub. pours amber with off white head. nose juicy hops, rye, and earthy. flavors are spicy rye notes, citrus, grapefruit, perfumey, slightly menthalated in the finish. odd tasting beer but not bad.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 GAManiac (1906) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - JUL 20, 2009
22oz blue-waxed bomber, courtesy of dug, poured into a tulip.
Pours a dark, clear brownish amber with a big creamy off-white head that clings to the sides of the glass and leaves lots of delicate lacing.
Aroma is a nice mix of citrus and floral hops, grapefruit and pine especially, and the earthy spiciness of the rye. There’s also a hint of sweet malts, leaving a very balanced aroma.
The taste has a quick citrus hop kick up front, but it lasts only a second before the big caramel and rye malt backbone take over. The finish is extremely interesting with dueling bitterness from pine and spiciness from the rye.
The mouthfeel is smooth but prickly with the rye and hops complimented by a low, soft carbonation.
I really like what the brewers done with the rye here, making an extremely well balanced IPA with a spicy and smooth twist. Yet another solid IPA from Flossmoor (beginning to sound like a broken record).

Sweet aroma. Citrus flavor with sweet, "juicy fruit" finish. Not as bitter as I was expecting for an IPA but tasty anyway. Medium, sparkly mouthfeel—not too thick. My favorite so far (only the brown ale to go).
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 holdenn (1855) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUL 17, 2009
On tap at Flossmoor. Pours orange amber with an off white creamy head. Rye, fruit, malts, and toffee in the nose. Fruity pale malt flavors. Herbal hops with some grapefruit. Finishes with some herbal hops though not as bitter as I hoped. Could use more flavor and aroma hops or maybe just all around hops.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MoDog (927) - Griffith, Indiana, USA - JUL 9, 2009
On tap at Flossmoor, served in a pint glass. Dark amber pour with a one-finger thick head of lasting beige foam. Heavy rings of lacing were left around the glass. The aroma had bright floral hops, fresh pine needles, and some underlying caramel. The flavor had caramel, a touch of rye spiciness, pine, and grapefruit. Really hoppy, but not overly bitter. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had light carbonation. Quite a tasty brew. Nice mix of rye and hops.

slightly hazy dark gold, small quickly disappearing off-white head, somewhat lacy. nose of tangerine, other citrus, but kinda mild. flavor is citrus with a touch of pine, and other things i can’t quite identify, generally spicy. medium bodied, lightly bitter finish. overall, a bit disappointing, but an exhausting brew since bryan threw everything he had into this beer. on tap @ brewpub mug club tapping.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BeerBunker (709) - Burbank, Illinois, USA - JUN 30, 2009
On tap at Flossmoor. Pours amber with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is of citrus, malt, grapefruit, and floral hops. Smells very juicy and sweet. Taste is of very juicy floral hops. Lots of hop sweetness, but not much in the way of bitterness at first. Big taste of citrus, bubblegum, and pine. Backbone of rye malt. Lingering hops taste with rye. Slight hop burn on the finish. I enjoyed it.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Cornfield (5277) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - JUN 29, 2009
A mug or more at the brewpub: This poured an amber body with a slight haze and a tall sudsy head that coated the glass(es) with thick lacing. Nice citrus hop aroma - oranges, tangerine, pink grapefruit, a touch of zest. The hops contribute more flavor than bitterness to the taste, nicely balancing a light, slightly spicy caramel sweetness. The bitterness returns in the prolonged, dry finish. Nice job by Mr. Shimkos.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - JUN 25, 2009
Imperial draft on tap at the brewpub (Flossmoor, IL). Pours a dull orangish amber, lively with offwhite cakey head, moderate that sticks around at large, good lacing. Lightly hazed. Aromas are light orange citrus, florals, and very fruity. Light rye malts fall to the back, but a nice light aroma. Initial is rye malts, nice bitterness that is decent on the palate, orange juice and zest, florals, and a bit of juicy fruitiness. A laid back IPA, for a hot day that doesn’t take you too far, light bodied, grassy and a nice rye malt (avoiding sweetness) take you home. Finishes lightly bitter, orange, and dry rye maltiness. A nice sessioner and change of pace by Flossmoor, albeit a bit watery. Cheers!
