UPDATED: AUG 2, 2006 Draft in a weizen glass (’cause it’s Big Beer Monday!). Indubitably big, hoppy smell as the glass sits in front of me. A hophead’s delight of pinecones and citrus, with a hint of pineapple and dander. The usual IPA orangey brown under a head that starts at 1/2" think and settles to a light dusting. Taste is sticky. The hops in the aroma are even stronger in the mouth, with an additional hint of lemon. Despite addition of sugar, hops still put the smackdown on any sweetness outside of a sticky taste on the lips. Towards the end I found the hops disguised a nice alcohol warmth that left me defenseless against the 100° day outside. Way overbalanced toward an interesting mix of hops, the way we like it.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Cornfield (5277) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - JUL 27, 2006
Drunk from my new mug club mug: Matt’s really pushing the limits on this one. When does an IPA become an IIPA? This has a big hoppy aroma of grapefruit, pine, and a touch of tangerine zest sitting atop some sweet caramel malt. Good balance in the taste, tipping ever so slightly towards the hops. The only thing keeping this one from doubling is that the bitterness, although well sustained throughout the drink and the finish, isn’t quite as intense as in an IIPA. A very, very nice treat for this hophead.

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2006 Fine example of the style...not so over- the- top as to blister the tongue (or even put off the newbie), yet ever so nicely bittered with fine PNW hopping. Very similar hop schedule as their great 10th Anniversary APA ( an APA in name only!) Upfront flavors of pine and grapefruit, anchored by a substantial and sweet caramel malt base. I find these the epitome of sessionable beers. Another great beer from two of my favorite brewers....Thanks Matt and Andrew!
