Pint from Matt VW’s last IPA batch at Flossmoor. Poured a hazy orange-gold with a decently sized foamy off-white head. Aroma was massive grapefruit and pineapple. Flavor started very citrusy and ended with a tongue-tingling and lingering bitterness. Nice sweet malt backbone. Incredibly drinkable despite the substantial mouthfeel. I missed out on the X-IPA its first go-round, but the re-boot definitely ranks as my favorite of the series.

This baby is bordering on a barleywine with its thick syrupy sweetness but those hops bring you back to what is the real story here, a fine double IPA. The hop aroma is the winner here but the flavors do not come through quite as much. Grapefruit, citrus, and pine aromas. Flavor is more sweet with some caramel thrown in there. Pour is a cloudy dark orange. My first foray with these guys and it was pretty enjoyable.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Glouglouburp (5572) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 22, 2009
In short: Solid but low-profile malt backbone. Fruity hops signature. Very well executed standard American IPA.
How: Bottle 22oz. Purchased at the brewpub, consumed fresh a month later. Tasting session with Montreal crew.
The look: Cloudy orange-copper body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose of earthy/dirty oranges. Solid malt backbone. Dry toasted bread and biscuits with rich caramel. Hops bring a juicy fruity (oranges and citrus fruits) bitterness of medium intensity. Smooth carbonation. Nothing new in this typical American IPA however this one is just put together better than average and it is highly drinkable. The type of IPA I would drink until I would drink on a regular basis if I could. Unfortunately up here in quebec this is harder to come by than a 16 year old french-speaking virgin.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2009 22 oz Black Wax bomber found in the depths of the fridge, kept well in the dark cold environment. Likely a bit past its prime, but I can not just get rid of it. Pours a nice dark amber / copperish hue with hazy body, moderate offwhite head that laces well. Aromas are head on: Grapefruit and citrusy hops assault the nose with a touch of grassy hops and carmel malts making an equally impressive showing. Body mirrors this largely. Citrusy and grapefruit zestiness includes some lighter piney resinous qualities and a powerful carmel and biscuity malt backbone. Finishes with a nice bitterness and some more citrusy, orange and grapefruit, juice qualities. Very nice, even with age. I would like to rerate this fresh for sure. Cheers!
Rerate; The Last Tapping: Extremely powerful Amarillo hop charcter preaching major grapefruit and pine. This baby is addicting. Heaven. I will miss you, Matt. Cheers!

My girlfriend bought me a bomber as a really early Christmas present. I tried to wait a bit . . . Pours a hazy orange with a nice head. Lots of citrus, lots of awesome hops. Basically, absolutely awesome IPA.

22 oz bomber courtesy of Todd. Pours a hazy coppery orange with a medium sized beige head. Aroma of fresh grassy tones, grapefruit and caramel. Taste dominated by grassy tones and grapefruit. Excellent.

Thanks to bwkrieger for the 22. Hazy copper with thin head. Lots of citrus hops but more than enough malt to balance. Some vanilla and caramel sweetness is quite nice, actually. Good example of an imperial ipa that isn’t over the top with alcohol and malt. Nice mix of citrus and spicy hop flavors, and solid bitterness to finish.

Bomber. Poured clear medium orange with a short layer of white head and some rising carbonation. The aroma was juicy with grapefruit, floral notes, and light peppery alcohol.. some light oxidadation detracted a little, but it was still quite nice. The flavor had a non-descript pale malt core with juicy grapefruit, cat pee, and floral bitterness surrounding.. warm overall complexion with some sharp boozy impact right at the finish. Syrupy and thicker on the palate with low carbonation.. spicy and complex, especially on the latter half. Tasty brew!
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 lb4lb (2044) - Austin, Texas, USA - SEP 5, 2008
Bottle from d0b.
WOOOOO!!!
Pours orange to brown with a white head. Where the hell is Erin? I thought she went for a short walk with a person with a broken hip, and how long could that take? Smell is hoppy and candy caramel like. Touch of a yeasty smell that does not belong in an IPA. Taste is yeasty, caramel and hoppy with some fruity and sweet flavors. Moderate bitterness. Decent but ridiculously overpriced. Man, they had a few amazing beers on at the pre-DLD but this is not the same caliber. Average...
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Beerlando (3342) - Orlando, Florida, USA - AUG 27, 2008
Black wax bomber. Pours extremely hazy and dark, burnt-orange to sienna brown in color. A frothy, cream colored head leaves sticky ribbons of lacing behind. The aroma is buttery and sweet, showing huge toffee and caramel malts and candy sugar in the malt profile. A hefty dose of orange juice and sharp grapefruit hops completes the nose. Flavors are overly sweet, with buttery toffee and hints of clover honey showing stronger than the orange and grapefruit hops that are meant to counter them. The big, syrupy, cloying mouthfeel is just over-the-top sweet. Overall, this is just too darn malty for my liking. Lacks balance.
