3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BuckNaked (1223) - Tempe, USA - OCT 8, 2004
2004 draught at brewery. Pours to a light golden color with a nice white head. It doesn’t really taste like you would expect an EPA to taste. Very american hoppy aroma, citrus, grapefruit, orange, and a touch of malt. The menu states 45 IBU’s, though it tastes more than that to me. Hops dominate the flavor with lots of grapefruit, floral, and very bitter notes. The malt just can’t keep up. Medium bodied, excellent carbonation are two things I can’t complain about. I would love to see a change of hops, maybe a bit more earthy or caramel notes in this one.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 joeycapps (1468) - Waterdown, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 28, 2005
Hazy amber w/ pale tan foam. Mild hop aroma w/ some light malt in the background. Medium, slightly sticky feel. Nicely balanced flavour w/ some earthy bitterness. Very much in the English style.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 shadey (1628) - Rochester, New York, USA - JAN 5, 2005
pretty weak for an IPA. Only a mild sour hop note in the finish. More like an american pale ale than an IPA..
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 jb (1601) - Rochester, New York, USA - DEC 9, 2004
Not a lot going on with this one. Decent appearance but on the watery side, considering this place is supposedly know for their pale ales I was disappointed. Not hoppy enough to be called an IPA.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 JahNoth (1039) - Rochester, New York, USA - NOV 13, 2004
Nice and fresh IPA. Deep golden color with little head. Spicy hop aroma. Watery body but good hop flavor, little malt to speak of. Spicy hop finish. Decent brew.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - OCT 4, 2004
2004 draught. Very bright yellow/pale gold appearance, chill haze and a good wispy white head. I was hoping for a English style IPA, but alas, it only includes the British word to go with the name; it is in fact an extremely bitter, unbalanced American interpretation. Though it does have some tasty fruit esters (orange, ruby grapefruit), there is no real attempt at a true balance (though I’ve had much more unbalanced than this). Juicy and bitter and at 7.1 abv, quite warming, but unspectacular and not what I would believe the British had left behind. Greg Smith (head brewer) has gone hops crazy. Medium to medium full body, floral hops (mainly) on the nose. Lots of astringency. Low sweetness. Added points for being fresh. Not fresh, this beer wouldnt cut it.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sammy (6120) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 4, 2004
Had a preview. Think they are still experimenting. More convention IPA and a bit watered down version of the Magnum 44 Double IPA. I think this detracts rather than adds.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 cherr (162) - Rochester, New York, USA - JUL 19, 2004
I tried this beer on opening night at the brewpub so it may have been a little young. It has a nice unfiltered appearance. The smell is somewhat hoppy, the malt and bitterness is apparent. Good for british IPA style. I would prefer an american IPA, but I will not deduct for that.
