Amber reddish hue with solid off-white head and good lace. The aroma hints of smoked malts, caramel, aromatic hops, and zesty yeast esters. The taste start malty and sweet but then a good portion of bittering hops comes along and changes your palate. Nice! A smoky undertone makes this a surpisingly complex brew. A really enjoyed the couple I had in Buffalo, too bad the weather was crap.

Quite good. I had this on gravity pull at the Old Toad in Rochester, NY. Strong with a bit of a sweet flavor. A nice bitter finish. Good stuff for the cold weather.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2011 On tap at Sidebar in Buffalo. An orangey/brown pour with a white head. Smells malty, tastes malty as well. It has a sweet taste, hard to put a finger on it. Kinda nutty in the flavor. Creamier mouthfeel than I expected. It wasn’t exceptional, but not that bad.

Pours a copper-amber head with small white lacing Aroma is of distinct caramel. Start is hoppy and bitter improving to a mellowing flavor to caramel. Not really balanced. Had on tap.

Liked this one. Tasted at Alternative brews. A deep coppery red color with a thin white head. As expected, a malt driven beer with hints of peaty smoke in the aroma and tase. Big sweet caramel, toffee malty flavor up front backed up by a smooth, but assertive bitterness and a little warming from the alcohol. Very little in terms of hop flavor. The rich flavors are betrayed a bit by a slightly lighter than expected body, but it was still medium-full bodied.

On tap at Buffalo Brewpub: Dark reddish body, small off-white head, malty nose with a hint of smoke. Sweet, malty body with a touch of smoke and some bitterness in the finish.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2003 poured a dark woodish color with a decent head..it was very malty yet kinda thin tasting, with no real scottish ale flavors and more like an american amber..however, it was decent.

Sample at Clark’s Ale House, Syracuse NY. Awesome aroma of burnt caramel, scotch whiskey and raisins with a beautiful overlay of smoke...dark, oily amber with just a little head that lasts....flavor doesn’t deliver though, bit too harshly alcoholic and, I thought, too hoppy for the style with the smoky malts and caramel sweetness overwhelmed by pine...ehh, still worth trying for the beautiful nose.
