Amidst the sea of stainless steel and concrete beneath our brewing platform lies a world of experimentation — a pilot brewing system, barrels, casks, specialty ingredients, and more. Literally a playground for our brewers, it’s an area that breeds some of our most cutting-edge releases. The latest is Barrel-Aged Horn Dog: Our 2011 vintage Barleywine was aged in oak port wine barrels from local Elk Run Vineyards for over a year. Barrel-Aged Horn Dog will go on sale exclusively at the brewery on Tuesday, March 26 from 10 am to 6 pm. Only 300 bottles (750 ml) are available to the public. From there, when it’s gone, it’s gone.

Corked bomber into tulip glass, dark dirty rust color with tan head. Aroma of port wine, brown sugar, vanilla, dark fruits (raisins, plums) and oak barrel. Taste balances the wine, heavy malt and barrel notes very well. Heavy body, moderate carbonation (almost champagne-like), sticky with sweet slighty-oaky finish. Delicious.

Bottle thanks to Jeff. Pours a cloudy brown with a small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong port, brown sugar, and raisin. Thin mouthfeel with nice port character, candy sugar, raisin, with nice boozy sweet finish. Easy to drink, really enjoyed this one.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Hazy burnt-caramel pour with a miniature, creamy, off-white head. Rich, malty nose of caramel, coconut, vanilla and loads of oak barrel character. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and kicked-back carbonation. The flavor is a gorgeous swirl of caramel, vinous/fruity port, coconut and brown sugar. Finishes malty, sweet and warming with a hint of acidity. Muchos kudos to growler for picking up this world class rarity and shipping it my way! Where were these one-offs back when I lived only twenty miles from their Frederick, MD facility?

Had this for my birthday along with Wegmans Chocolate Cake. Poured dark brown, aroma was dried fruit, malt, sweet, and booziness. Flavor was more of the same. Port came through with a nice sweetness at the end. Choclate cake brought the flavor out and visa versa. Wish I had another bottle!
