Brewed exclusively for the 2013 Craft Brewers Conference (and a collaborative project with Reyes Beverage Group), Bloodline is an intensely-hopped IPA brewed with Blood Orange peel and juice.

According to our Brewmaster Matt Brophy, the result is a flavor profile that harnessed the best aspects of both the hops (Warrior, Citra, and Galaxy) and the citrus. He and his brewing team are very fond of hop-based citrus aromas, so experimenting with actual citrus was a natural extension of that.

2014 version is brewed with Northern Brewer, Citra and Galaxy.

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. This was unique but not anything to rave about. Just because you add something different to a beer doesn’t make it extraordinary.

clear amber color; very citrusy aroma; citrusy, orange flavor;bitter on a fairly light, bready malt base; the blood orange blends pretty well with citrusy hops; dry, bitter finish

Tart citrus aromas. Copper with a slight reddish tint and foamy head. From start to finish the tart citrus dances with the hop bitter each one switching who is leading. Finish is dry from hops but some how refreshed from the citrus.

Glass: Dogfish Head signature.
Appearance: Clear and vibrant amber/orange body with a tall and dense, but short lived light tan head.
Aroma: The aroma is very light but prominent with sweet leaning orange, hints of herbal hops.
Taste: Orange flavors are prominent with mild bitterness and a bit of toasted malt. Not much depth, blood orange overpowers.
Palate: Medium bodied, moderately carbonated.
Overall: I saw they used Citra and Galaxy, but you wouldn’t know it since the orange dominates. Not bad, but they might as well have used cheaper cascade.

Fresh bottle from Premier Gourmet. Orange tinged body, no head. Some blood orange flavour, even less hop. Not as interesting as Bellwood Omerta.

Pours clear orangey/amber color with white head. Aroma of orangey/piney hops and caramel malt notes. Taste is blood orange, orange zest, light caramel and citrus/piney hop bitterness. Medium body, low-moderate carbonation. Mild bitter dry finish.

Draft at City Tap House DC. Pours a clear dark golden color with a medium of white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted malts, orange citrus, spicy character, moderate bitterness, some orange peel, decent enough.

The orange influence adds another dimension to what is already a decent ipa .

(Bottle) Clear light golden complexion with thick white. Aroma of light malt with light orange essence. The flavor is bitter orange peel, citrus hops and slightly sweet orange fruit. Long lingering finish of orange zest and semi-sweet orange. Well crafted and nicely paired variety.
