355ml bottle @ The Bhurtpore Inn, Aston. Basically tastes like waking up drunk in a flower bed wearing your Nan’s flowery dress and pot pourri in your hear. Fruity, potent & although others on the table thought it was offensively bad, I rather liked it.

jgb9348 (4490) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - MAR 23, 2014
Slightly hazy bronze and copper coloured body with a muddy amer glow and a thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of chocolate, fennel seed, pine and a bit of cleanser - definitely more astringent than the brewdog version. Medium-bodied; Assertive herbal notes at first gives way to a medicinal and woodsy flavour that shows some juniper berry and alcohol finishes. Aftertaste has some light chocolate and sweet notes that fade to a dry, herbal note and leaves the palate very astringent and not too pleasant. Overall, a pretty poor beer, period. Tasting this horizontally, I prefered the British version given that it was slightly less astringent and showing a bit more complexity around the herbs making it more of a gruit. Regardless, these aren’t for the faint of heart and are not worth searching out if you’d even want to try that - don’t. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle adjacent to the American (Flying Dog) version of this beer on 23-March-2014 at home in Washington with this specific twelve ounce bottle purchased at Whole Foods in Tyson’s Corner (Falls Church), Virginia on 31-October-2012 for US$2.59.

(Bottle) Amber colour, slightly hazy, with frothy off-white head. Malty, herbal nose with spicy herbs (thyme, sage, rosemary), juniper berries, ginger, elderflower and citrus. Malty, fruity, herbal taste with notes of crystal malt, orange, juniper berries, elderflower, ginger, rosemary and thyme. Medium body, with balanced sweetness and low bitterness. Tasty and quite interesting. Different, but enjoyable.

Smells weird, almost no head. Tastes weird as well, some ginger, cinnamon and other spices. Mixed feelings about this.

Bottle... Clear amber brew with a tiny, fleeting, white head. The bouquet furnishes rooty and herbal notes – ginger, sarsaparilla, sassafras and vanilla flanked by a hint of cinnamon. Light to medium-bodied with lively carbonation. The well-balanced flavor is lightly acidic and spicy with a suggestion of toffee. Finishes up like a gingerbread cookie. Nice gruit. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!
