2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
What is this beer? I don’t really think it’s an octoberfest. It fails to put me in a festive mood. Mostly because it lacks any stand-out flavor or distinguishing characteristics. Kind of like if you took a bunch of beers and mixed them together. Obviously, better than an Anheuser World Select or anything else entirely terrible, just not really good in any way.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
2005 bottle consumed 9/7/2005. Rich amber to light auburn-copper color. one finger beige head. Lots of big bubbles, clear, with average head retention. Little aroma, light brown bread, munich malt graininess, bits of oranges and cream. Citrus is fairly strong. Slight lacing. Flavor shows some light acidity, fresh, spicy hops and sweet toffee. Quick, clean finish with some bits of caramel sticking here and there. Some light breadiness as it warms, and a good flavorful hops spiciness in the back of the throat. Up front, it’s a bit too hoppy and citric/fruity. Needs a good deal more yeast apparency as well. It’s flavorful, but not bready/doughy enough and relatively low on crispness to the mouth. Caramel, oranges. . .seems more like an American Amber ale than a German amber lager. Carbonation is not bad though and since it’s extremely fresh, it has not had too much time to go stale, as all filtered beers do, and quickly. To style, not so good.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Seems to be missing the aftertaste that plagues most Flying Dogs. They are often good beers, they just have a weird aftertaste. This one doesn’t, that helps it out. This is a decent Oktober. Nice deep amber color with a sweet malt flavor. Fall is coming, and with it Oktoberfest. Let the party begin

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
True to the Flying Dog tradition it has a taste that is unique. The aroma is caramel malt with hops. The Appearance is reddish brown with an average head. The flavor is sweet with hints of caramel and wine. There is also plenty of toasted malt. The hops are subtle and so it the paper taste that is in the aftertaste. Also there is something in there that I just cant describe.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 oz bottle: Orangey copper clear w/ a lasting off white head of fine bubbles. Lightly tosted malt aroma w/ some hints of roast. Grainy malt and mostly clean w/ some green apple. Flavor is well balanced w/a sulphury yeast and grainy malt flavor. Slightly bitter into the finish and aftertaste. Also has some bready malt flavors w/ what seems to be a bit of an alcohol flavor. Low medium carbonation, dry m/f, lighter medium body. Drinkable enough, but the malt character seems a bit harsh compared to what I think it should be, or my liking! Okay for an octoberfest.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Fairly aromatic beer. Huge malt sweetness that smells clean and refreshing. Caramel/orange color with a thin, but firm head. Nice smooth malt profile with a touch of hop bite int he middle and an almost candy sugar (Belgian) finish. Underrated beer.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Autumn 2004 bottle: Even after a year of laying around this marzen has still remained a gem. Has some weak signs of malt in the aroma with also a touch of hops. Color is a beautiful auburn orange with a quick fizzy head but that maybe be due to the fact this beer has lost its freshness. In the drink i find notes of sweet malt and hay with a low hopping flavor. Could also be said a background of honey is here as well. I might have to pick up another six pack of this from the Octoberfest season this year.

1.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20
Um no, didn’t like this one at all. As a matter of fact I haven’t had another flying dog brew since. Weird sweet flavors didn’t jive.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This bottled brew poured a small sized head of light brown colored foamy finely sized mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a carbonated transparent copper brown colored body and a poor lacing. The aroma was vinous and port like with mild caramel notes. The mouth feel was initially smooth thick and mildly tingly. It had a good caramel malt flavor and was very well balanced and good.
