malty, doughy aroma; earthy, toasty, caramel flavor; tart, lingering finish; slightly metallic
2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 fuyajo (229) - Portland, Oregon, USA - OCT 20, 2004
Pours orange with a medium head. There’s a sweet, malty aroma, but there is little flavor to this beer. It has a week finish, too. I have yet to have anything by this brewery that I enjoy.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Dogbrick (6178) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - OCT 15, 2004
On draught at Lazy Chameleon. Dark copper color with a thin white head. Decent lacing too. Mildly malty aroma and a bit of roastiness. The body is kind of weak, with sweet malt and a little nuttiness and hops on the back end. The finish is mostly sweet with a light hops bitterness here and there. As with most of Flying Dog’s beers, the elements are all there but the execution falls short.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BückDich (5466) - McCall, Idaho, USA - OCT 12, 2004
Bright crimson ruby color with waves of carbonation rising up into the sparce head and disapointing lacing. Semi sweet malt aroma with a musky hop note and dusty presence. Sweet taste with a good amount of malty body and light bittering hops but they don’t really connect together and it comes accross unbalanced. Finishes with a bite and a bit lagery (go figure). Decent Oktoberfest.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 PullMeABeer (203) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - OCT 10, 2004
UPDATED: OCT 11, 2004 Bottle. Clear light reddish brown, thin off-white head, that was completely gone in a few minutes. Aroma alcohol, sour lightly toasted malts, and some berry fruitiness. Medium chewy body, nice light carbonation. Flavor is mild, fruity earthiness (pear skin, and raisins), little musty, metallic in finish.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Sham (1845) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 7, 2004
Amber pour with hints of red and a creamy thick white head. Nice lacing, almost sheets. Thick and rich malt aromas. Caramel dominates with hints of roast underneath. A warm biscuity smell is accompanied by a bready or yeast aroma. There is a hint of sourness lurking about as well. The hops are sweet, with a slight spiciness about them. A little bitter. Flavors are big in the malts again. The caramel is nicely balanced with some roastiness. Not too sweet at all. The hops are mellow and bitter with touches of spice throughout. The palate is very creamy, the body is thick, and it finishes off with sweet malts and bitterness.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 DYCSoccer17 (3041) - Woodland, California, USA - OCT 7, 2004
Aroma is actually PNW hoppy in a way. Mild caramel malts in the nose as well. Crystal clear copper amber color with virtually no head after the one that disappears immediately. Very roasty and malts. A very roasted beer, but unfortunately is its only dimension. Not bad, but kind of thin.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jcc83 (137) - Athens, Georgia, USA - OCT 6, 2004
Pours that nice copper shade so typical of this style, with a decently thick white head. Richly malty aroma, with a good bit of spicy hoppiness. Flavor is dominated by malts and is thus quite sweet. Sweetness is well balanced, however, by a cinnamon spicyness and a sort of tartness in the finish. Fairly thin, but not in a negative way. A good seasonal brew.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 IndianaRed (1799) - Boise, Idaho, USA - OCT 6, 2004
Bottle Pours a deep redish copper with very little hed and sparse...no...scant lacing. Aroma is motly malty, wooody and sweet grain. Flavors are consistant. A full tasting, malty toasted grain. Robust and heavy. Easy on the hops and a barley bitter, woody aftertaste.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Aubrey (3347) - Bellingham, Washington, USA - OCT 5, 2004
Amber orange with a decent head. Nice malts, with a decent level of sweetness. Notes of sweet grains, bread, caramel and some lactic-ish sourness. Acceptable level of bitterness, but I’d prefer a little more. At any rate, it’s an easy-drinking beer.
