4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 rajendra82 (806) - Alpharetta, USA - NOV 7, 2004
The first beer marking the 70th Birthday of Flying Dog Brewery (10th in human years) was purchased in an elegant Champagne bottle with cork and a wire cage (Bottle # 750). Freeing the beer out confinement resulted in a satisfying pop, followed by nice gunsmoke. One sniff of the bottle revealed the unmistakable sweet sour smell of ripening mangoes, taking me way back into my childhood days in India.
The beer was poured into an Imperial Pint glass, and looked very nice, with a deep hazy copper tone and a tall fluffy beige head that stayed on for eternity. The aroma was very malty with the aforementioned mango smell, supplemented by caramel, grapefruit, and apples.
The taste was very well balanced between citric and sweet. Once again I was reminded of the mango flavor profile. This did not feel like 80 IBUs, no way. I would not classify this into an American Double IPA at all. If there was such a thing as an English Double IPA, this would be it.
Mouthfeel was thick and roasty with the 9% ABV not playing any part of a spoilsport. This felt quite delicate and elegant, with a restrained warmth, and this coming from drinking it well after dinner. With food, this beer would slip quietly under the radar screen of detection.
A wonderful entry from this brewery that seems to be becoming the next Sierra Nevada. Happy Birthday, and I look forward to the rest of your anniversary selection.

Bottle. Dark amber with a small ring of off white head. Big resinous pine hop aroma, some caramel and a little alcohol. Similar taste, pine, caramel and alcohol. Oily with a long lingering bitterness and an alcohol warmth. Nice, not sure what separates this from a double ipa

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Sigmund (3713) - Hafrsfjord, NORWAY - MAY 16, 2012
355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11.5%, 85 IBU. Amber colour, moderate off-white head. Strong sweetish aroma of orange marmalade, crystal malts, loads of American hops - and some alcohol. The flavour is sweet (orange marmalade again) and alcoholic, and very hoppy throughout, with a solid bitterness. Certainly not "easy drinking" - but when you finally admit that you have to drink this beer VERY slowly, it is not that bad. Just not Flying Dog’s best.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bigirishphan (50) - Peoria Heights, Illinois, USA - MAY 4, 2012
Great double IPA. Pours an almost red with a fresh clean hoppy nose. The taste is grassy, citrus, and oh so wonderful hops. Didn’t linger too much but didn’t disappear. I fell in love with this and will always be close at hand for me.
