Commercial Description:
Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 7.8% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

Pours black with slight brown highlights at rim and a substantial tan coloured head. Nose is multidimensional! Dry cocoa powder, sweet dark fruit and resiny hops. Palate shows malt sweetness early before chocolate and coffee roast come into play. Finishes with substantial resiny hop bitterness. Carbonation is relatively soft, and palate weight is spot on for a porter. I’d love to try this fresh! Regardless, this is an awesome brew!

black with tan head. moderate carbonation with roasty nose. flavor mostly of roasted malt with a ton of hop bitterness that actually overpowers the roasted malt. nice alcoholic depth, very good. but i believe the roasted malt makes this a stout

12 oz bottle. Had this before, but having it again to rate it. Pours about a finger-high tan head, that dissipates after a minute or so. Smells of malt and roasted coffee (my favorite). Has a motor oil black color, but a lesser consistency than motor oil. Tastes mostly like roasted coffee, but has a smooth chocolate finish. Very good porter, probably one of the best I’ve had (though I have had very few imperial porters).

Black pour into creamy tan head. Heavy lacing melts into a ring of tan colored bubbles that hang on the edge of the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee and malty hops. Initial flavor of buttery toffee, slight hoppy bite with a lingering sweet dark chocolate finish.

Nightblack, with steddy foam. Smelles of dried fruit, coffee and herbes. Extremely long duration of aftertaste. One of the top 5 beers I have tasted.

Black as death with a tan head. Smells thickly of roasted malts and hops with a hint of alcohol presence; coffee, vanilla, and chocolate notes are there. This one looks, smells, and feels like a stout. This one tastes sweet, fragrant, and rich with flavors of toffee, dark chocolate, black licorice, and a large amount of hops for that porter spice. Has a silky mouthfeel. Is very smooth and mellow while cold but as it warms the alcohol comes through alongside some spicy notes; complex and dangerously drinkable. This is my kind of beer!

No sunlight in the body, as Hunter would have wanted it... dirty brown head dissolves to a ring of grey bubbles in a Maudite snifter--a devilish way to begin Advent! Rich, thick fragrant bouquet of sweet molasses, chocolate and pleasant hops--a full-bodied aroma... heavy body that drapes around the tongue like a pallor, or a shroud--thick yet smooth--warming and immense in presence... the alcohol makes itself aware late with a linger... rich, yeasty taste with hints of chocolate, peat and bread--not smoky, per se, but thick with something dark... having saved this for the last of the FD sampler, I am bowled over by this beer’s "drinkability" (Miller Lite is harsher than the 9.2% ABV this beer sports)and its enjoyable complexity. It ALMOST makes me want to seek out Thomspon’s writings to find out what the big fuss was about....

12oz bottle. Pours pitch black with a huge tan head. Chocolate aroma with coffee, hops, dark fruit, yeast, vanilla and caramel. Coffee flavor with dark fruit and a hoppy alcohol finish. Good stuff.
