Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

Pours deep brown, almost black with a tan head. The taste is bitter with liquorice and pine before smooth coffee and chocolate flavours. Some sticky sweetness. Velvety mouth feel. Excellent.

Black with tan/brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, taste of burnt sugar, roasted, dark chocolate, bitter coffee. Quite bitter for a strong porter, maybe a touch too much for me. Nice alcohol warmth but quite thin. Decent, but I’ve had much nicer strong porters.

Darkest brown with thick tan head. Aroma is coffe, cocoa, iodine, caramel, toffee, orange... Very creamy and even oily, with fresh sourness. Full body and a great final bitterness that lasts long. Delicious.

Bottle. Pitch black with a mostly lasting smooth light brown head. Lots of lacing around the glass. Aroma of pine, grassy, coffee, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, dark fruits. Taste is of dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, some roasted malt, burnt notes, slight warming notes of the alcohol. Full bodied, smooth mouthfeel, light carbonation. Very nice.

12 oz bottle to a tulip glass. It was delivered to my store today and says vingate15 so I assume it’s fresh. The beer pours an opaque black with a thick and frothy tan head that slowly shrinks down and leaves tons of lacing. Aroma is coffee, roasted barley, dark chocolate, and a faint sweet hoppy smell. It’s kind of like sweet cream with a touch of orange zest. Taste is rich and very heavy up front. Cocoa, espresso, licorice, coffee with too much cream, and a ton of roasted dark grains are dominant. There is also a lingering bitterness that reminds me of chewing on dark roasted coffee beans. I also get some woody flavors, which is weird considering this is not a cask aged beer. Pleasant, nonetheless. Overall mouthfeel is on the thicker side, but alcohol is just about invisible in the taste, which is remarkable for a 9.2% abv beer. Well done for the style.

Bottles @ home. Vertical of bottles bought 2011 vs 2015 (BB dates 2013 and 2016). While 2011 has a medium head, 2015 has a large and large bubbled head. Color is dark brown to black. 2011 A: vinous with cocoa & delicious milk chocolate O’boy, dates, wood and some caramel, dark bread. 2015 A: Roasted smooth maltiness, red fruits, caramel, tropical fruits. 2011 T: Sweet taste with medium carbonation, notes of milk chocolate O’boy up front, red fruits, dates, hints of vanilla & raisins (but not as vinous as aroma). Lingering cocoa and dark bread, earth and a hint of oranges. 2015 T: Roasted and sweet with medium to high carbonation. notes of dark chocolate, raisins, plums. Lingering red fruits, oranges, dark chocolate and a refreshing and assertive grape bitterness. While i doubt the recipe is exactly the same it’s suffice to say that the 2011 vintage has aged really well and receive the higher score

Bottle from systembolaget sweden. Big and long lastning brown head. Fresh hoppy aroma but only tiny roasted malt aroma. Mild roasted malt taste and a mild and light body for an imperial porter.

Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Aromas of roasted coffee, roasted malts, licorice, toffee and cacao are all present. Bitter on the palate with a touch of sweetness. Great bitter finish.
