MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Oct 15, 2009 Bottle sample courtesy of my friend Adil. Deep opaque cola colour, with a frothy beige spotty cap. Intense nose of licorice, anise, roast, coffee beans, strong on the hops. Tastes of roasty and toasty goodness. Cocoa and coffee. Again, big on the bittering hops. Very astringent and dry. Very good. berkshirejohn (1759), Bracknell, Berkshire, England Oct 13, 2009 12 oz bottle from Tesco, Bracknell. Brownish black with a dense caramel coloured head leavfing light lacing; the aroma has chocolate malt with touches of vanilla and caramel; rich flavours and a silky feel, with lots of bitter chocolate, but also wood smoke, coffee, cheap brandy, oak barrels and mint toffee; the finish is sharply bitter at first with obvious alcohol, but becomes dry and mellow. jimmythechippy (15), , Australia Oct 12, 2009 nice flavours, not too strong on the alc. really nice interpretation of the style... zvikar (413), Tel-Aviv, Israel Oct 11, 2009 Pours black reddish with a medium mocca color head, aroma of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and vanilla, tobacco flavors, roasted malts, coffee, brandy and oaky notes, finishes bitter and acidic, full bodied, Amazing brew. Frovigalning (388), , Sweden Oct 11, 2009 It poured a pitch black liquid with a small light brown foam that left a thin layer on the side of the glass.
It had a strong boozey smell of chocolate, wood, coffey and soy sauce.
It had a strong taste of chocolate, coffey, nuts and a hint of cognac. Felt very complex and interesting. It had a bitey, dry mouthfeel and a long lasting taste. Very nice and perfect with the chocolate my brother served. RR (26), Kentucky, USA Oct 10, 2009 Bottle. Blackish pour with a nice brown head. Coffee and Burnt Chocolate aroma. Flavor follows suit. Good balance. Aftertaste is a bit of alcohol. That is the only thing holding it back. zapprentice (309), East Setauket, New York, USA Oct 8, 2009 Cask at Rattle N’ Hum. Was ok on cask, nothing special. Definitely a better bere when cooler in my opinion. The warmth took away from a lot of the flavors. I’ll leave cask condition stuff for things that are not imperial stouts or porters neepsntatties (280), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 7, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Colour... black with a thick tan head. Nose... coffee, bittersweet chocolate, roasty malt and hops. Palate... thick and frothy with loads of black coffee, dark chocolate, roasty-toasty malt, licorice fern root and hops galore that linger on the finish for minutes on end! Why didn’t I try this sooner?!
