Smells of dark malts, chocolate, molasses, and maybe black licorice. A hint of hops. The taste is dark chocolate, molasses, coffee, and heavy malt, balanced by a very nice hip bitterness. Wonderful! There are hints of alcohol but not overbearing. It has a medium mouthfeel and some creaminess. It strangely reminds me of a tootsie roll for some reason. This is very drinkable and one of my favorites. IDunno19 (78), Ames, Iowa, USA

Nose full of malt, hops, smoke, dark chocolate, and cedar. Malty sweet palate with notes of dark chocolate, licorice, hops, and Sumatran coffee. Jet black with a toffee colored head. graham515 (424), Houston, Texas, USA

Aroma is lots of chocolate and vanilla with some fruit. I don’t get much coffee or roast. Silky texture and a nice chocolate flavor. A good dose of hop bitterness. Nice beer. shawnm213 (913), South Bend, Indiana, USA

I hear the abv has changed a couple times with this beer. Not sure what the deal is. pours dark brown with a nice foamy tan head. notes of chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, roasted malts. A nice creamy somewhat complex cocoa coffee treat.
had this beer again the following day at the beer engine on nitro. super creamy and now supposedly 9%abv. who knows. Damico (165), Norristown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Oct 19, 2009 It smells delicious, like a strong Belgian ale almost. it has a big frothy head and a beautiful dark appearance. The flavor is creamy and delicious, but the hop kick they describe is a little too bitter for my taste. MrManning (1639), London, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 15, 2009 Bottle sample courtesy of my friend Adil. Deep opaque cola colour, with a frothy beige spotty cap. Intense nose of licorice, anise, roast, coffee beans, strong on the hops. Tastes of roasty and toasty goodness. Cocoa and coffee. Again, big on the bittering hops. Very astringent and dry. Very good. berkshirejohn (1796), Bracknell, Berkshire, England
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 13, 2009 12 oz bottle from Tesco, Bracknell. Brownish black with a dense caramel coloured head leavfing light lacing; the aroma has chocolate malt with touches of vanilla and caramel; rich flavours and a silky feel, with lots of bitter chocolate, but also wood smoke, coffee, cheap brandy, oak barrels and mint toffee; the finish is sharply bitter at first with obvious alcohol, but becomes dry and mellow. jimmythechippy (15), , Australia
