Gpnterojd (162), Orangeville, Ontario, Canada Sep 23, 2009 Aroma of pears, cherries, grapefruit, chocolate and coffee. Almost opaque, lightbulbs just manage to poke through its murky complexion. Small dirty slush head. Ampules of flavour - smoke, bologne, grapefruit, dark chocolate, lemon, apricot. Fantastic material for the tongue to dig through.
Dry on the palate. Leaves a large and warm imprint on the mouth and throat. Damn good. Dredd (484), Ormond, Australia Sep 23, 2009 Magnificent, aroma of raisins, coffee, black appearence with thin tan head.
Flavour is a rich mix of dried fruits, roast malts and a balancing bitterness. EFC1878 (291), Manchester, Greater Manchester, England Sep 22, 2009 Bottle from Tesco. Black as they come with a thick, frothy beige head. Muscovado sweetness, chocolate and a strong coffee note amongst the aromas with a little alcohol. Initially has the typical porter sweetness but there’s a decent hoppiness complemented by roast malt bitterness as a counterbalance with some warming alcohol. Nicely rounded long dry finish and a very smooth palate. Very, very good. One for the autumnal chill. nerdrocker101 (102), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 21, 2009 Bottle. My favorite from the series. Black as night with a thin tan head. Roasted malts, coffee and vanilla notes. Smooth, but I wish it had a fuller body to give it some extra creamy characteristics. Nonetheless, great beer. Fratto (670), Arlington, Texas, USA Sep 20, 2009 Fuck, This is good. Fantastic coffee smell and taste, finishes amazingly. One of Flying Dog’s best beers. Davros (200), Australia Sep 17, 2009 Impenetrable black pour, stunning tan head leaving some lacing.
Aroma of dark berries, cherry, dark chocolate. Pretty much a black forest cake. Hints of liquorice, roasted barley, caramel and sharp spicy hops. Damn fine.
Flavours show sweet nutty malt and caramel first, followed by more spicy hops before a dominating smoky, roasty, woody, boozy assault. This is a big beer!
Quite a rich, creamy mouthfeel, but the alcohol is untamed in my opinion. weaselkenievil (738), Cheshire, England Sep 15, 2009 Bottle from my local Tesco. Again with Flying Dog, if I was going to demonstrate a style I would not choose their brews. However, I do enjoy some of them. Black with a chunky beige head. Like the frothy foamy trd foam that washes up on English beaches. And Welsh too, get down to the lovely black rock beach. Aroma is a little alcohol, chocolate. Flavour is smooth and mellow, bit of hops and the usual roasted malts, coffee, chocolate Porter characteristics. Easy to drink and tasty. Enjoyed this one. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Sep 14, 2009 Bottle from Jason’s in Ellicott City, MD. Pours darkest brown with a foamy tan head and great lacing. Aroma is coffee, cocoa, dark fruits, and some floral hops. Flavor is lots of caramel malt, toffee, coffee, roast, nuts, chocolate, and a surprising amount of citrusy and floral hops. Palate is smooth and full with some lingering hop and coffee bitterness. This is a very good beer.
