Bottle, thanks sevenhokie! Roasted malt aroma with notes of chocolate and coffee. Pours black with decent mocha head with good retention and lacing. Smooth, clean mouthfeel to start with roasted malt and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes slightly dry with coffee bitterness as well as a bit of hops. Good porter.

4.3 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Flying dog has great artwork on every bottle, and even better beer inside. Aroma of dark roasted coffee. Tasted of Dark Chocolate and the darkest roast of coffee available. Lots of molasses and syrupy feeling on the tongue. I could taste the boozyness in this one, but it was a nice the warming kind of boozyness.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black pour with a tight brown head, looks almost syrupy. Huge aroma jumping out of the glass - toffee, malty, coffee, liquorice, cocoa. Strong taste up front, dark malt, coffee, tobacco, and as this fades hoppy and dark chocolatey bitterness cuts through. Really excellent beer

Was lured in by the sweet drug-trip artwork and stayed for the enjoyable swallow. Loved the movie, loved the man, loved the Imperial Porter. Browner than the inside of a chocolate chip’s ass with a nice mocha head that hung around for a spell. Taste and aroma were sweet leathery brown sugar, with strong dark malt and alcohol taste. It had a slick , slightly oily slurp to it and I reckon Hunter S. Thompson would tip more than a few of these.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Splendid beer. Tar black with oily mouthfeel but a good toffee brown head. A good drinking stout which tickles the nose thanks to a fair amount of alcohol. Once you’ve had a swig, you’re left with a strong bitter chocolate taste. Bliss!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from the De Molen beershop. Poured a deep mahogany with a whispy light tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. The flavour is strong bitter, with a rich alcoholic liqoourice light resin hop palate and a long bitter finish. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. A nice porter, but the liqourice bitterness dominates.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle ("VINTAGE10 HH" from 4/2011 notes) served in a pint glass. ABV listed as 9.2% on bottle
A lovely dark mahogany liquid going into the glass where it appears nearly black and quite opaque. Thick 1-finger head is a nice dark tan and has very retention and lacing.
S - a complex and rich aroma, with markedly more hop than a standard porter, but then this is an Imperial porter. Plenty of caramel and toasted malt, not marred by the burnt notes I too often find (and dislike) in other porters.
T - perhaps even richer than indicated by the aroma, and definitely more bitter. (IBU = 85). Finish is a blend of roasted malt with a moderate bitterness and dark chocolate notes. High (9.2%) ABV, detectable by nose, is fairly well hidden in the taste.
M - Full body; good carbonation, although probably above average for a porter.
O: Brings together the best of a porter with an PA or IPA, and these are surprisingly well integrated.
