IPAGargoyleGuy (139), Troy, NY, New York, USA Apr 4, 2008 I can see why they call it an American Strong Ale instead of IS, its a bit hoppy but has the chocolate, roasted, nutty, and sweet character as well. Possibly the best from FD. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Apr 3, 2008 12 oz bottle from a trade with mcbackus. pours black with a big tan head. looks perfect in my snifter. carbonation is perfect. aromas are sweet chocolate, coffee, toffee, and all other good black beer aromas. oh and theres hops in the aromas too. flavours are overly sweet and a bit pushy on the palate. mostly agreeable but some sips were not that enjoyable. as it warmed i found it the flavour profile agreed with my palate more. a nice brew that im glad i got to try. mcferc4 (55), New Jersey, USA Apr 3, 2008 Interesting. I was really surprised with this one. Flying Dog’s best beer, in my opinion. Very dark. Strong malts. Chocolatey roastage. Diggin’ the 9.5% alcohol. A solid brew. BeerTyrant (6), USA does not count Apr 3, 2008 Very tasty and strong beer. Pours a dark black-red, with a medium-sized, brownish tan head. It has a nice aroma, and it has something that I can’t quite distinguish... it’s almost a minty aroma, but not quite that. I taste some chocolate flavors.
Delicioso! FatTony (121), Augusta, Georgia, USA Apr 2, 2008 12 ounce bottle- pours out a rich dark brown/black with a large and long lasting coca-cola colored head. Very attractive visually. The aroma is coffee with a metallic under bite. I was very surprised that a brew this dark and aromatic did not fill the mouth like a good stout. Taste was coffee and smoke, very pleasant, but gone too soon. The alcohol content is a surprise. Good to excellent overall. Scauca (408), Lovere, Italy Mar 31, 2008 Updated: Mar 29, 2009On tap. Strong rich aromas, choco, lico, coffee and that piney hopping. Nice dry bitter end. tkimbrought05 (37), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Mar 30, 2008 Big imperial fan so naturally I was excited to get my hands on this beer. Pours thick with a tan head, nice chocolate overtones with a little bit of smoke added. Second was a bit more alcoholic than the first for some reason. Taverner (825), San Ramon, California, USA Mar 30, 2008 Wow - the flavor here is, sultanas, prunes, something I can’t put my finger on, dark rich chocolate malts, alcohol and smoke. The palate is only hit on the left side, not the right. Maybe I’m having a stroke, but that’s seriously how it feels. Dark and foreboding - this is like an acid trip in a Hunter S. Thompson piece. Like nothing I’ve ever had. Or will have. Pours black with brown head.
