Duhast500 (176), , Massachusetts, USA Aug 17, 2009 beer that was dedicated to Hunter S. Thompson can not be a bad thing. I was intrigued so I decided to give this porter a try.
Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass
The color is a dark black, held to the direct light it seems almost a deep brown, the heap is good foamy white, white sticks to the glass as is dissolves.
The smell is of roasted malts, a good auroma of coffee and dark chocolate.
The taste is just deep. Roasted malts, drak chocolate and a bit of coffee flavor rounds out the taste buds.
Keeping up with a great Imperial crowd this beer had the balls to to a little strong but flavorful at the same time. It was just the right mix of malt flavor and tasty coffee undertone that made me do a double take. Pretty darn good.
yalnikim (776), Wellington, New Zealand Aug 16, 2009 Good old Gonzo... A nice black beast of a beer that has an air of "I was once incredibly hoppy". That’s probably died away and he’s left a little sweet, but he’s still a good friend that I’d like to hang out with more. I’ve recently begun thinking of big black beers as falling to two distinct categories: "drink now" and "drink later". Gonzo falls into the former, I even wish I’d had it earlier. All that aside: I give Gonzo two thumbs up! dj (418), Gloucestershire, England Aug 15, 2009 Bottle, 355ml. A deep treacle colour with a good head. Strong aroma of roasted barley and some biscuit notes. A strong malty flavour with treacle notes, hops and a touch of spice. Really good! USCBeerMan (103), Columbia, South Carolina, USA Aug 15, 2009 Bottled. Pours dark black with a very thin brown head. Powerful notes of coffee and licorice in the nose, with a fine hopping. strong aroma. Creamy mouth feel and the flavor has notes of black chocolate, roasted malt and licorice. full body, average tporter carbonation, long finish with high bitterness from Cascade hops. A light hint of alcohol is felt and warms you well. It becomes better as it warms. After all a very fine beer, even though I hoped better wavers1 (110), novato, California, USA Aug 14, 2009 nice black pour with a course brown head. huge notes of very pleasent coffee and roast, softened by hints of vanilla and molasses. very full creamy mouthfeel and body with tons of coffee and some smoke in the flavor. very nice carbonation and the well rounded mouth get it a 5 there. the tastes fades with a very smooth combo of burnt dryness in the back and plenty of sweet caramelized vanilla on the tongue. def a worthy selection from flying dog. drowland (1337), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 14, 2009 Not as complex/deep as I was hoping, but still delicious, and I really like this beer. Sweet and fruity malt with a dry coffee finish of roasted malts. angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Aug 13, 2009 Bottle. Pours black, wish beige large foamy head. Aroma is chocolate, spicy hops, roasted coffee beans, dark cherries. Heavy coffee notes, smokiness, bbq. Nice duration on the flavor. Great syrupy mouthfeel with light carbonation. piscator34 (1121), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Aug 9, 2009 Bottled sample via oakbluff. Black in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas of black forest cake, molasses, stewed fruit, and booze. Flavors are very roasted malt forward, wtih notes of coffeem dark chocolate, smoke, and flint. Caramel and vanilla elements show themselves on the back end, and there’s a subtle herbal hop note that lurks in the background. Fairly heavy bodied, although not quite as much as the heaviest impy stouts. Classy and complex.
