BillWyce (90), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2009 Pours a deep brown, almost black, with a nice dark tan head. Sweet carmelly aroma with an alcohol note. Has a slight lingering oilyness on the tongue. Flavor of coffee with a nutty note at the finish that lingers on the tongue. Very nice. drjay44 (757), Salida, Colorado, USA Aug 6, 2009 7 oz. bottle. Pours a thick, mocha colored head of good duration, with lots of lacing, over an opaque, black (SRM 40), clear? body.....nose heavy with coffee, chocolate....taste is dominated by early coffee, cocoa, finishing with licorice and lingering hop bite....mouth feel is heavy and chewy, with the medium carbonation making for a creamy effect. The heavy hopping dominates the malt back bone too much. The balance is off. If it were called an "American Style Imperial Porter" it would be right on. williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 6, 2009 A flat dark brown color. A finger of light brown head, which turns into a decent-sized film. Just really dark and not much more.
Has a nice toasty malt aroma. Mild mocha coffee and dark chocolate. Sweet and a little roasted but not at all burnt. Mild earthy raisin and black licorice. Real real nice.
Pungent licorice/raisin sweetness in the taste, but also a heavily burnt malt. Strong alcohol. A mild, piney hop. Strong but also full of flavor. Doesn’t use the alcohol to mask flavors.
Thick, chewy and dry feel. This drink s strong, but really very nice. It’s a combination of sweet, but also roasted dark malts. Botnik (101), Carrollton, Texas, USA Aug 5, 2009 7oz bottle, deep black color with a moderate brown head, Rich complex stout like flavor with a tangy hops finish. I believe I’ll have another. joeneugs (282), Livermore, California, USA Aug 3, 2009 Dark brown with a dark brown head. The aroma is vanilla, chocolate, coffee, black licorice. Flavor is roasted malts with salt, black licorice, marshmellows, molasses, vanilla and raisins. A pretty complex beer with a pretty hefty hop presence in the finish. darbish (81), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 1, 2009 smells malty, bready, and (as weird as this sounds) cold. Appearance is textbook porter (black, opaque with a small head). flavor is a smoky and roasted taste, that continues into a slight hoppy bitterness. has respectable body, not to thick, not too thin. tasty. beernovice39 (237), South Carolina, USA Jul 28, 2009 Tried this alongside of Stone’s porter. Both were great. Like more bite with the gonzo at the cost of flavor but all in all excellent! Not really all that bitter either, take as good or bad I guess. Elwood (648), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Jul 28, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with a creamy tan head. A very earthy nose with notes of mineral, roasted malt, a little vinousness, raisin, and a light touch of pine. Medium-low carbonation with a rich, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Nice roasted notes on the palate with some earth, mineral, and to a lesser degree coffee and caramel. As the beer warmed, some oak and vanilla came out. A medium, sweet finish. This is definitely the best beer I’ve had from Flying Dog.
