Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

Near black, dark brown pour with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate malt, with roast and a slight grassy hop presence. Feels thin in the mouth, but still smooth -- not over carbonated or two thin like Road Dog. Flavor is completely dominated by the chocolate malt, but there is coffee and roastiness in the finish. Hop presence only balances -- little flavor. Probably the best I’ve had from Flying Dog. Not excellent, but I don’t mind Thompson’s fist getting the money.

Bottles @ home. Vertical of bottles bought 2011 vs 2015 (BB dates 2013 and 2016). While 2011 has a medium head, 2015 has a large and large bubbled head. Color is dark brown to black. 2011 A: vinous with cocoa & delicious milk chocolate O’boy, dates, wood and some caramel, dark bread. 2015 A: Roasted smooth maltiness, red fruits, caramel, tropical fruits. 2011 T: Sweet taste with medium carbonation, notes of milk chocolate O’boy up front, red fruits, dates, hints of vanilla & raisins (but not as vinous as aroma). Lingering cocoa and dark bread, earth and a hint of oranges. 2015 T: Roasted and sweet with medium to high carbonation. notes of dark chocolate, raisins, plums. Lingering red fruits, oranges, dark chocolate and a refreshing and assertive grape bitterness. While i doubt the recipe is exactly the same it’s suffice to say that the 2011 vintage has aged really well and receive the higher score

TEJA (1525) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - APR 18, 2015
Bottle from systembolaget sweden. Big and long lastning brown head. Fresh hoppy aroma but only tiny roasted malt aroma. Mild roasted malt taste and a mild and light body for an imperial porter.

Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Aromas of roasted coffee, roasted malts, licorice, toffee and cacao are all present. Bitter on the palate with a touch of sweetness. Great bitter finish.

355ml bottle. Brown-black with one finger beige-brown head. Aroma of butterscotch, caramel, roasted coffee and piny, resiny hops. Nice hop punch in the taste, citrus and grapefruit mostly, followed by roasted malts and coffee. Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation, some alcohol noticeable.

Hopmaestro (358) - Örebro, SWEDEN - APR 8, 2015
Aroma is slightly burnt malts, strong coffee and hard liquor. Taste is like a porter on steroids, with all the characteristics that apply to that. What I like mainly with this one is that it’s so powerful and tasty, yet balanced and held back, it never tips over to the super-extreme side. The touch of salty licorice that comes in the end is magnificent and when the aftertaste sets in with that subtle bitterness, I touch myself inappropriately.

One of the more interesting beers from flying dog. Rich and coffee like heavy and deep black. You should know that it’s gonna bite back. Bottle

Flaska från SB. Svart med tjockt beige skum. Doft av choklad och vin. Mycket vin i smaken med en del choklad och kaffebeska.

Old rating. Love the label. Silly smooth, smoky, coffee, chocolate. Some sweet booziness. Everything you want in a porter.
