4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma: Complex aroma of roasted malt, citrusy hop, caramal, and a hint of sherry.
Appearance: Jet black. Looks like a stout.
Flavor: Delicious roasted and caramelly malt notes, and an excellent fruity hop flavor. Some alcohol notes, but not harsh or astringent.
Palate: Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel with a little alcohol bite, but adds character rather than detracting.
Overall: Excellent, tasty, complex beer.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours like 10W30 with a small light brown head with excellent lacing. The aroma is sweet with notes of roasted coffee, molasses, and chocolate. The Flavor is sweet and smoky with notes of coffee, molasses, and dark fruits. The texture is creamy. It’s an excellent beer...If Hunter Thompson hadn’t blown his brains out while tripping on acid, I’d congratulate him.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The ravens-steelers game is making me, as a browns fan, extremely sad and jealous, so Iím having this to console myself. Pours black with dark, dark brown visible around the edges. Minimal tan head generated, and it was gone just as fast as it had appeared. Nose is not too strong, with a slight coffee/chocolate and malt to go with a faint booze smell. Taste thankfully is much better, with very nice coffee and faint chocolate making this a nice porter, and the brief hop taste in the middle making it stand out. Bit of an alcohol warmth at the end, but nothing special. No flavors are too strong, making this beer kinda indecisive but good at the same time. Carbonation is stronger than expected, and quite nice. Drinkability is good for the 9.2% abv.

This is a great beer. Other than by the "imperial" name, youíd not know this was so high in alcohol; its very pleasantly hidden behind a complex balance of chocolate malts and subtle hops. I really like the flying dog Iíve had, and this is the best. One of the better porters Iíve had.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Itís dark: almost black with a thin tan head. The beer has a complex aroma of molasses, dark chocolate, black licorice, raisin with scents of citric hops alongside. The body is quite full; it has a nice, smooth mouthfeel. After sitting and settling, the aroma shows more of the initial raisin with prune. The flavour is nicely balanced, with an interesting green hop presence right alongside the expected, dark roasted porter flavours. There is a fair bit more of the dark chocolate and black licorice, molasses, some nuts, subtle coffee, all with an underlying citric element: lemon and slightly sour white grapefruit pushing through the darker flavours. The finish is long and dry with more licorice, coffee and light leafy hops.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown/black. Smells sweet and malty, a bit of hops. Good long-lasting heavy sweet flavor. You can definitely taste roasted malts, chocolate, and some coffee.

Look, I donít like Porters. This isnít an acquired taste, Itís rich dank and chewy. Very thick and foreboding. That said? You need to drink a couple to get your palate acclimated to this odd-ball monster. Thereís little in the way of hops in the traditional sense, but wait? after the 3rd of these Iím getting the hang of whatís up here. Chocolate (dark) and an anise flavor (liquorice) and more. Has a very nuanced cognac flavor. Iím liking this more and more as the night wears on. Damn good stuff.

12oz bottle: A nice aroma hops coffee and roast. Taste much the same with good balance between the coffee bitterness and the malty sweetness. No alcohol presence on the palate. A medium to full body with a smooth silky mouth feel. This is very tasty. Certainly the best Flying Dog has to offer. Iíll definitely pick this up again.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2006 This beer is REAL rich and GOOOD!! Itís unusual in that it has a distinct "hoppy " smell at first sniff. But it is toned down a little in the taste, but for a Porter it has a bit more than the "norm"..but, now let me state that in and of itself isnít a bad thing in this beer. It just tastes more like a dark IPA!!. It has a kind-of Hebrew Jewbulation like taste. A really good balanced Dark ale.that is super drinkable and has the most unique wonderful flavor not found in any beer
have yet tried! A Very addictiveI beer!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Wow. This beer truly surprised me with its uniqueness. A very dark, essentially black pour with a dense light brown head which leaves moderate lacing. The aroma in bottle is all hops, but in glass is a beautiful balance of roasted coffee malts and pungent floral/citrusy hops. The taste is again surprisingly complex hitting all the right taste buds, again with bitter hops and delicious coffee malts leaving a great dry coffee aftertaste. Not as strong a body as Iíd like considering the 7.8%, and with just a touch less hops it would be (in my mind) perfect.
