3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hard to come to grips with this one. Pours dark with a smalish head Aroma of malt and yeast. Astringent blast of burned malts first hits, which diminishes moderately quickly to be replaced by some hints of dark stone fruit. It’s just not balanced. Has an alcoholic finish. Yet, I like it for its faults. Perhaps aging would round off the edges.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Rating the barrel aged release. Pours deep brown, no head. Below average carbonation. Nose is whiskey and the taste doesnít disappoint with nice hop finish. Not balanced, but I love the whiskey so much, I donít care.

Pours very very dark brown with a modest brown head that dissappears. Aroma is malty and hoppy. When just poured, you get mostly hops in the nose, then as you are drinking, more malt sweetness. The taste was almost too balanced and neutral to me at first, with the alcohol very well hidden for a 9.2 (as marked on my bottle). In fact, the alcohol is more hidden than in any beer I have had at this high of an ABV. I really canít put my finger on the flavors here, but I can tell you this, it tastes good. Maybe a caramel, toffee like sweetness up front, then a rush of fresh hops to balance everything out, then just the tiniest hint of warming alcohol in with the late hops in the finish. Definitely will have again. Recommended.

Pours dark black with a medium brown head. Smells of chocolate and coffee. Mild carbonation. Tastes predominately of coffee (not overpowering), also chocolate and roasted flavors.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 9, 2008 bottle, 2 years old: tons of yeast sediment left behind in the bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown with a light brown not quite tan head that starts out about on finger and quikly disapates to a small layer on the surface. laces the whole way down. The aroma is strong of licorice with plenty of weet malt and dark fruits mixed into the surprisingly subtle roastyness. FULL bodies brew that leaves a chewy finish. A lot of sweet malt on the palate, almost fruity. The sweet malt is followed by that licorice in the aroma mixed with planety of roasted malt and a little chocolate. The finish warms the throat ever so slightly, bbut leaves a not so pleasent salty roasty coating to the mouth.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The beer pours black with a tight light brown head. Sweet malty smells are mixed with sharp roasty aromas. The malts are also present in the taste along with a sour-ish dairy finish. This may not sound the best but it tastes quite good. As the beer warms the sweet aromas become slightly more prevalent. I can feel the alcohol having its effect, but it is very well balanced not overpowering on the palate. The beer is medium to heavy bodied and a very fine porter.

Easily my favorite Flying Dog, this thick nectar hits the hoppy/malty balance right on the mark. You can sit there and roll the flavors around your tongue for a full minute or two before you take another sip. From the great artwork on the package to the last drop of beer you can squeeze out of the bottle, this is one fantastic brew.
