Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

Poured a thick dark shade of brown out of the bottle, almost sheer black in the center of the glass but with root beer colored highlights around the edges where the light crept in. I didn’t get much head retention of this one - maybe 3/4 finger - but what was there was a nice caramel brown. Looked very inviting overall. I didn’t note as much alcohol in the smell as some have reported, but I did catch the expected burnt coffee, brown sugar, faint raisins, toffee. The nose pretty much foreshadowed the taste to a T. Nice oily hop presence up front with the roasted malt and bitter coffee coming in on the back of the tongue. With the mouthfeel being nice and chewy, almost like oatmeal in itself, for some reason this beer gave me just as much of an impression of a high-octane oatmeal stout as it did a porter. Could have been my mind playing tricks on me. Nonetheless this is quite a good beer; not necessarily one of the all-time greats in this style but quite drinkable. I had two of these last night before I really felt the buzz setting in, and if the buzz had been my goal I probably could have managed one or two more. I would have ranked it a bit higher on drinkability except there’s something a bit too familiar about the way this goes down.

I was pretty blown away by this beer, definitely high up there for a porter. Very strong initially with lots of alcohol and coffee. Pours a beautiful dark brown. Simply Delicious - PLUS it pays tribute to Hunter S. Thompson. Can’t go wrong.

12oz bottle purchased at Corral Liquors in Granite City, Il. Pours almost black, with a nice airy beige head. Aroma is a light coffee/toffee/chocolate. The hops come through nicely in the flavor. The bitterness and the alcohol feel just right. I let this get to room temp. and the aroma was increased by about 30% and the flavor increased as well. The aftertaste of alcohol slightly increased as the beer neared room temp. This is one of my favorites!

poured dark, almost black, with a small tan head. I am getting nothing but soy and alcohol in the aroma. Very glad that did not transfer to the taste. Roasted malts with a dash of hop bitterness. No alcohol to be found. Finish is just a little than I hoped for but a good porter all the way around.

pours beautiful, thick black with a lingering tan head. smells of coffee, chocolate, roastiness, and malt. taste is super-dry, which is surprising considering the other reviews. alcohol is well-hidden behind chocolate, coffee, and rather bitter hops. very bubbly. i really would have liked more malty sweetness.

12 oz bottle into tulip -Great aroma, milk chocolate mostly with a hint of coffee. Light amount of alcohol picked up. -Pours beautifully. Very dark, nearly black. not at all translucent. A head of about 3 fingers on top, a great burnt caramel color. Dissipates into a thin film leaving some lacing on the glass. -Tastes of dark cherry with a bit of hoppiness. A little malt flavor comes through as well. Slightly bitter like dark chocolate, but only little chocolate flavor. Bitterness dissipates slowly on the tongue after sip. -Silky mouth feel, coats the mouth nicely.

Pours dark with a nice stable head. Smokey aroma. Rich malts with chocolate taste. Also hints of pine. Complex and well balanced. Very nice on a dark winter night.

Dark Brown with Dark Tan Creamy Head, very thick almost syrup like. Smooth feel and very robust. Lots of smokey/bitter aftertaste.
