Surprisingly hoppy, grassy aroma This is a hoppy, chocolatey rich porter. Very full body. Really nice. Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 24, 2006 A dark black appearance with a beige head. A strong coffee and chocolate aroma. This sucker was very carbonated, in fact the cork flew straight up in the air when opened. The flavor is well balanced with a bitter sweet flavor. Roasted coffee beans, chocolate, and licorice are present. Good beer. ucusty (1922), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

Pours dark brown, almost black with thick tan head and slightly spotty lacing. Chocolate, figs, and a slightly smokey aroma. Creamy, velvety mouth-feel with licorice, vanilla, and chocolate upfront. Malty finish. A little age on this beer yielded excellent results. Kevin (1920), Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 8, 2005 pours black with a dark head. nice alcohol sherry aroma, definitely chocolately too, and some noticeable grassyness.inviting after an hour workout.sweet flavor at first that has grape and chocolate. finishing bitter balances this out well. the alcohol in this is hidden perfectly. i would not know it was 9.5 if i didn’t see it in front of me.. lingering plum like sweetness in the finish has just the slightest alcohol bite.this is a damn fine beer and i hope to see the gonzo fist memorial someday. marcus (1918), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 30, 2008 This black ale poured with almost no head. The flavor is very intense - malty with chocolate and coffee notes and a fairly bitter finish. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 30, 2006 12 oz bottle marked "VINTAGE 06A". Dark, dark, sable - just shy of black. Big brown head, tons of thick brown lace. Reading other ratings, about 6 months of age must have really knocked the hops down on this, because they are only slightly detectable in the nose, a mild resinous pine. Mostly chocolate scents remain, touches of charcoal. Flavor is mildly sweet, milk chocolate, light cinnamon notes, hints of charcoal, coffee and dark fruit. Thick body, very full mouth, mildly creamy. Mildly bitter finish, more chocolate. Very enjoyable. Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 9, 2006 A viscuous pour fills my glass with a thick, black liquid under a tall, creamy, mocha-brown head. Aroma finds smoke and citrus (orange) with chocolate sugar wafer. Big alcohol when warm. Creamy bordering on syrupy, flavor is thick malts with sweet chocolate followed immediately with dark, bitter coffee. This was good, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way... as if the flavors were not as interesting as they could have been within such a deep, chewy brew. Few complexities.
