COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you donít show it the proper respect. IBUís: 85

Look, I donít like Porters. This isnít an acquired taste, Itís rich dank and chewy. Very thick and foreboding. That said? You need to drink a couple to get your palate acclimated to this odd-ball monster. Thereís little in the way of hops in the traditional sense, but wait? after the 3rd of these Iím getting the hang of whatís up here. Chocolate (dark) and an anise flavor (liquorice) and more. Has a very nuanced cognac flavor. Iím liking this more and more as the night wears on. Damn good stuff.

Iím not sure why they donít just bill it as a stout, it bites and burns like a stout, and it doesnít have that smokey, sweet malt backbone that I associate with my favorite porters. Stylistic quibbles aside, this is a fine beer. Gonzo pours jet black with a lot of creamy, tan head. The aroma is strong coffee and chicory and figs. The flavor has a big burst of licorice, molasses, dark candied fruit, and booze. The 9.2% ABV is loud and proud, and thereís nothing wrong with that.

Bottle from SB. Very good and tasteful Imperial Porter, but I think it could have had even more taste. Still very good!

Svart med hÝyt lys brunt skum. Lukter mÝrke frukter, alkohol, blomster, espresso og mÝrk sjokolade. Litt for mye salt smak, noe mÝrke frukter og kaffesmak. Lang saltbitter ettersmak.

Pours deep brown, almost black with a tan head. The taste is bitter with liquorice and pine before smooth coffee and chocolate flavours. Some sticky sweetness. Velvety mouth feel. Excellent.

Black with tan/brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, taste of burnt sugar, roasted, dark chocolate, bitter coffee. Quite bitter for a strong porter, maybe a touch too much for me. Nice alcohol warmth but quite thin. Decent, but Iíve had much nicer strong porters.

Bottle. Pitch black with a mostly lasting smooth light brown head. Lots of lacing around the glass. Aroma of pine, grassy, coffee, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, dark fruits. Taste is of dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, some roasted malt, burnt notes, slight warming notes of the alcohol. Full bodied, smooth mouthfeel, light carbonation. Very nice.
