Commercial Description:
Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 7.8% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

The aroma is a wonderful variety of smells. I think I picked up hints of dark bread, roasted malts, chocolate, and maybe mild coffee. There is also an alcohol presence in the aroma as this is a 9.0% ABV beer. It pours an average sized, creamy, light-brown head that is mostly diminishing. The body clarity is best described as muddy. There is no possible way to see through it. The body hue is dark black. The initial flavor is a like a kick in the face (in a good way). You get lively carbonation, sweet chocolate and heavy roasted malt taste followed by a long lasting bitter hop and finish. This beer is full-bodied and deliciously creamy, especially when not too cold. This is a real gem. Great to drink slowly and appreciatively.

Vintage 05. Pours dark and thick with a big off white head. Chocolate and fruit aroma. Very balanced taste that has hints of chocolate malt, dark fruit, and dry merlot. This is a very smooth and elegant beer that is a wonderful tribute to the HST.

Poured a bottle into a tulip glass. I’m not sure how old this beer is, but probably several months at least. I bought this on a clearance sale. I think the aging has been good for it, however. Very impressive! Huge, multi-inch cafe-au-lait colored head that lasted seemingly forever, followed by decent lacing on the glass. Aromas of coffee, alcohol, hops, slightly medicinal, but overall pretty good. Many different flavors abound in this beer. Coffee, toffee, chocolate, caramel. Sweet with some hoppiness to balance. Tastes very good. Alcohol well hidden. Never would have guessed it’s a 9.2%er. Mouthfeel is kind of sticky with a good bit of drying after each sip. You can feel the carbonation as well. Bit of a bitter chocolate aftertaste. Nice beer, but quite rich. High ABV and richness limit the drinkability, but overall it’s a very good beer.

Pours a very dark black with a dark brown head. Fruity dark chocolate aroma. Smooth beer, bitter finish. Would definitely have again.

Hey Idunno, welcome back! Very impressive beer. Nose full of malt, hops, smoke, dark chocolate, and cedar. Malty sweet palate with notes of dark chocolate, licorice, hops, and Sumatran coffee. Jet black with a toffee colored head.
