Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you donít show it the proper respect. IBUís: 85

Draft at Coffee District in Delray Beach. Goblet. Extreme dark brown opaque with thin tan head. Moderate lacing throughout. Aroma of rich malts and nuts. Taste was a little less complex than I was expecting. Roasted malt comes through, slight bitter hops, dark fruits and a hint of coffee. Smooth finish. Little boozie. A b minus in my book.

Bottle. Black with a thick tan head. Aroma is mostly chocolate and roasted malt with a hint of hops. Taste is very hoppy for the style. Citrusy and piney with some umami and chocolate lingering in the finish. Slightly thin but silky mouthfeel with strong carbonation. Pretty good but the hops are slightly overwhelming. Could use more balance.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2007 Poured a dark brown, with faint red on the edges with a medium sized light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast, milk chocolate, pine, and citrusy cascade hops. Taste is muddled, chocolate, roast, and nuts, lots of piney hoppiness, and medicinal alcohol. On second tasting, I donít think its a great porter, itís ok though.

Bottle poured an inky opaque black with a brown head and lace. Aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some grassieness. Flavor is roasted malt followed by dark chocolate, with a dry bitter finish and a hint of sourness.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2005 re-rate-i just bought another 4 pack of this stuff and its definately mellowed out in the flavors. lots of roast and chocolate dominate now with the hops fading away very fast. I should try to find another fresh bottle. the flavors are less hoppy as well and the malt profile is not oxidized like it was fresh-it tastes more full and smooth around the edges now. Im not going to raise my rating just yet. I will sample another and let you know. 12 oz bottle-I was suprised that this came in 4 packs and not a 750. A good thing it is! damn, this beer pours obsideon black with a sudsy tan head that was huge with some lacing. The aroma is bigtime hoppy, but i must admit, its not in a good way. smells like a big copper penny with some pine and abrasiveness of pine sol. fresh hop aromas but not in the right combination. flavors of roast, toffee, and somewhat cardboardy chocolate. it tastes like the special B malts and the other dark malts were old when they brewed this beer. Then, they tried to cover up the oxidized malt flavors with a ton of hops both in the boil and dry hopped. I must admit, the alcohol is very well hidden. As the beer warmed, the offensive notes started to fade on all levels. I think this beer may have some aging potential-it will be interesting nonetheless.

Opaque and black, Gonzo throws up a thick head of light brown. The head color has been seen as the body color on other Porters. The aroma is inviting, some chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor, while not the best Iíve ever had is not bad. Above average for Flying Dog and a move in the right direction. Smooth and rich, maybe falls behind the aroma a bit, but not a drain pour. Slightly sweet and roasty, the alcohol is well hidden. Worth a try if youíve not had a Flying Dog in a while.

pours out dark black with a tan head. aroma is hoppy, rich, and sweet. taste is very similar, yet somewhat hoppy as well. fairly smooth to drink. the 9.5% doesnt make its presence known until around halfway through the glass, with the last sip being almost brutal. a nice beer, the best flying dog ive ever had, but it needs to maybe age a little bit. thats why i have another bottle.

I loved HST and his writing and this beer is close to being a fitting tribute. Closer to a sweet stout then a Baltic imo. Very nitrogen like creamy body( not my favorite thing) with decent roastiness. A lot of sweetness in the finish though.
