Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you donít show it the proper respect. IBUís: 85

Draft. Midnight black, strong caramel aroma, flavors of roasted coffee, chocolate and cane sugar. Solid

Thanks to my Secret Santa (pantanap) for this beer. Pours a very dark black in an absolutely huge head. Frothy and rocky with big lacing. Nose is vanilla, coffee and cocoa. Sweet malts as well. Taste is cocoa, bitter hops and some vanilla. Rather carbonated mouthfeel with the flavors dancing on the palate. Nice.

Bottled. Vintage 071. Beer is very dark brown, used motor-oil appearance and opacity. Head is initially smallish, light brown, frothy, mostly and quickly diminishes but thinly survives.
The aroma is malty with heavy notes of roasted grain, milky chocolate, singeing coffee, light note of caramel sauce and cookies; Hoppy with a moderate/heavy note of resin/pine, moderate note of herb; Yeasty with a light note of cellar, light note of piquant dough; light miscellaneous note of smoky wood. trace of rubbery sap, light/moderate note of alcohol.
The flavor is moderately/heavily sweet, moderately/heavily bitter, lightly/moderately acidic. Finish is long, lightly acidic, lightly/moderately bittersweet.
The body is full, the texture is velvety/syrupy and the carbonation is average.
Sheís a big boy. Huge in the nose, fully opened throttles in the flavor. Still note nuts over what Iím starting to understand is probably the house yeast profile, which seems to team up with the resin to produce a lot of sharp points in the nose. Interesting beer, though.

This porter poured a deep black colour with a nice big, tan coloured head. Scents include cocoa, burnt malt, grain and molassass. First taste was smooth and roasty with flavours of nuts, roasted malt and a little chocolate. Finish was malt with a palate that lingered chocolate lightly.

Poured a deep black color with a small brown head that dissapated quickly. Aroma of chocolate, black coffee, and roasted malts. The taste was a lot of roasted malts with chocolate hints. The bitter taste lingered in the back of my mouth for a while, you get a little of the alcohol flavor at the end. It was very pleasant. Much better than expected.

12 oz bottle. Decent, but really nothing overly exciting or complex in the aroma, some good roasted black malts, nutty caramel, and some unimposing hops. Interesting swirled head of mixed dark and light creams, but besides this, nothing more incredibly enticing about its looks, as its visually lighter in body than expected and dark cocoa brown in color. Initially there is a nice creamy, solid feel, but then this gives way to a rather blah carbonated soda type feel right through the middle of the swallow, that puts me off a little. It is also lighter on the flavor and complexities than it could, not poorly balanced though, with a similar package of taste notes to those of the aroma. The end of the finish is by far the most enjoyable aspect of this beer with a good, creamy caramel and light mocha malt along with a hint of earthy bitter. A good beer, but it definitely left me underwhelmed as i usually like hopped up porters of his kind. Oh well.

A bottle tasted at Kaisla. Dark brownish colour. Brown head. Slight chocolate in the nose. Dark chocolate in the taste. Slightly too hoppy.

12 oz bottle served in a snifter. Dense, oil black in color. Light brown one-finger head. Nose is malty, sweet, and roasty. Upon further review, theres a strange (chocolate) cough drop or soy sauce aroma. Creamy mouthfeel, some carbonation, and not overly weighty. The finish is nice and makes up ground for the off-nose. The hops show up at the end and mingle nicely with the malts. The alcohol is well concealed throughout.

Aroma was surprising. More like a barleywine with mildly sweet hops and just a dab of chocolate. Dark pour, mocha head like most other porters. The flavor was lightly hoppy, with more chocolate and molasses coming through. The palate was creamy and lightly bubbly. Much better than the Road Dog, which I detested.

Poured a dark dark brown black with a thin beige head. Nose was malty, with a hint of hops and alcohol. First impression was a big mouthful with a lot of bubble gum. As it warmed the malt and hops and smokey flavor were revealed, with chocolate and coffee notes. Decent depth of flavors, definitely worthy of the imperial label.
