My first was a few months ago, and this is a bottle that has aged considerably since. Poured oily black again, but with a much thicker, near three-finger head this time around. Big chocolate and coffee in the nose; the taste is what really mellowed. The alcohol burn that was very present last time is nearly gone now. Finished dry and clean again. Still a favorite! Retention is good, and the head turns rocky. A nicely toasted malt aroma. Taste of molasses, deep roasted coffee, and chocolate malts. Full body. Creamy texture. No taste of alcohol. Outstanding. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 2, 2008 Pours balck as night with nice billowing tan head which fades to some nice sticky lacing. Nose is potent and unusual. Chocolate and tart berries, some roasty coffee notes, some spice from the alcohol which burns the nose just a touch... in that oh so good way. Flavor is chocolate and coffee with big hop presence. Very roasty with a mild sweetness to balance out the heavy hand of the hops. The bitterness is way up there, but is well balanced by the other characteristics. There is a nice fruity tartness that rolls alongside the bitter coffee//chocolate notes very well. Ends with a good dose of hop bitterness. The complex flavors hang around on the palate quite a while. Nice lucious thick body with a touch of tingly carbonation. I absolutely love this beer. timjertson (26), Waseca, Minnesota, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 2, 2009 Dark brown pour, slightly dark dark tan head, left great lacing. Sweet, malty, chocolate coffee aroma with a bit of hops around the edges. Flavor is the same. Smooth with chocolate and coffee, bit of a burnt tinge to it. Somewhat of a cider taste to it. Slight bitter bite in the finish that goes away quickly. Nicely full bodied. uhclem (192), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 9, 2008 Pours a deep espresso brown with a massive coco cola colored head that rapidly subsides. Decent lacing. Nose is malt, coffee and chocolate. Taste is bitter chocolate, with first malt, then hops making their presence known. Decent mouthfeel. Finish is luxurious, with the flavors leaving, one by one, until only the hops remain. cbeers21 (589), Miami, Florida, USA

Nice milky black with powerful mocha head. Good lacing, great body...looks great in the glass. Really robust malts are apparent and smoked to smell, with a hoppy toasted caramel quality. Nice oily texture to compliment layered and intriguing flavors: Chocolate, roasted fruit, vanilla, smoke, toffee, and juicy berries. Really enjoyed this brew on a lot of levels
