doppelmeup (51), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jun 10, 2008 Poured a bottle into a tulip glass. I’m not sure how old this beer is, but probably several months at least. I bought this on a clearance sale. I think the aging has been good for it, however.
Very impressive! Huge, multi-inch cafe-au-lait colored head that lasted seemingly forever, followed by decent lacing on the glass.
Aromas of coffee, alcohol, hops, slightly medicinal, but overall pretty good.
Many different flavors abound in this beer. Coffee, toffee, chocolate, caramel. Sweet with some hoppiness to balance. Tastes very good. Alcohol well hidden. Never would have guessed it’s a 9.2%er.
Mouthfeel is kind of sticky with a good bit of drying after each sip. You can feel the carbonation as well. Bit of a bitter chocolate aftertaste.
Nice beer, but quite rich. High ABV and richness limit the drinkability, but overall it’s a very good beer.
Dango (11), Snekkersten, Denmark Oct 10, 2008 Excellent stuff. Strong with a nuanced complex palate. I guess I am still learning to drink the stronger porters and stouts. This one I really enjoy. Rciesla (891), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. Awesome tribute to Mr.Thompson. Pours a dark black body with a tan head. Roasted coffee, malty chocolate alcohol, a bit of oak and some hops to finish. BillKismet (1444), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 7, 2008 Black body with chocolate head and modestly carbonated. Enjoyable aromas of dark cocoa and coffee alcohol and deep roasted barley. Deep roast coffee alcohol flavor that does not overwhelm. Oaky flavors, though I do not believe this one is oaked. Chocolate-alcohol notes. Moderately-bodied. Packs a punch! stangger (135), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 6, 2008 Kennett Square ’08. Not knowing anything about this one, I was caught totally off-guard by the hoppy blast that followed the roasted malt taste. It’s interesting but not something I’d reach for regularly. satan165 (134), River Grove, Illinois, USA Oct 5, 2008 slightly boozy, strong hint of licorice, best display of that nuance in a porter ive ever experienced. strong, but plesant, thick and inviting, well hopped besides it all and nicely bitter despite its comforting qualities.
