mullet (763), Melbourne, Australia Jun 23, 2007 Love the label. Really black with a yellow pikelet head. Aroma of piney hops, ham (rauchmalz?), chocolate and oaky maltiness. All elements are pretty good, but they aren’t very complementary. Not clashing, just distinct as opposed to integrated. It tastes quite thick and sweet (bordering on worty) with loads of roasted malts but still manages to be a bit unbalanced. The roast flavour is really good (lots of chocolate malt?) but it clangs with the raw, resiny hop flavour and really lacks sufficient hop bitterness to round it out. On top of that, there’s something weird in the periphery that I just can’t put my finger on. DMS? The thought of McCain Baby Carrots came to mind but I can’t help but at least partially chalk that up to the power of suggestion. Eggs, maybe? Anyway, this has lots of really good elements, but I’m not convinced it really works as a complete package. Fun stuff though, and strangely it did taste more or less exactly how I would imagine an imperial porter. Onya Linc!
Dango (11), Snekkersten, Denmark Oct 10, 2008 Excellent stuff. Strong with a nuanced complex palate. I guess I am still learning to drink the stronger porters and stouts. This one I really enjoy. Rciesla (891), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. Awesome tribute to Mr.Thompson. Pours a dark black body with a tan head. Roasted coffee, malty chocolate alcohol, a bit of oak and some hops to finish. BillKismet (1444), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 7, 2008 Black body with chocolate head and modestly carbonated. Enjoyable aromas of dark cocoa and coffee alcohol and deep roasted barley. Deep roast coffee alcohol flavor that does not overwhelm. Oaky flavors, though I do not believe this one is oaked. Chocolate-alcohol notes. Moderately-bodied. Packs a punch! stangger (135), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 6, 2008 Kennett Square ’08. Not knowing anything about this one, I was caught totally off-guard by the hoppy blast that followed the roasted malt taste. It’s interesting but not something I’d reach for regularly. satan165 (134), River Grove, Illinois, USA Oct 5, 2008 slightly boozy, strong hint of licorice, best display of that nuance in a porter ive ever experienced. strong, but plesant, thick and inviting, well hopped besides it all and nicely bitter despite its comforting qualities.
