Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect. IBU’s: 85

Bottle. The pour was a murky pitch black with a large (2-3 finger) medium brown creamy head that had awesome retention, lasting until the end and producing some excellent clingy spotty lacing. The aroma was nice and robust of a roasted chocolate malt, a mild resin hop and an earthy leathery yeast with notes of bitter-sweet chocolate, dark roasted coffee, molasses and a quite pronounced scent of alcohol. The taste was bold and roasty with a sweet acidic malty flavor that had hints of molasses and chocolate at first and then having a nice bitter sweet coffee flavor take hold with a very strong alcohol presence at the end. The flavor hung on for a decently long time letting one enjoy the nice mocha coffee flavor and a nice alcohol warming sensation. Mouthfeel was a solid medium in body with the texture being a bit oily yet a little dry towards the end with the carbonation being quite lively. Overall a nice strong, bold and roasty brew with a good rounding of flavors and a kickin’ alcohol finish.

Pours black with a long lasting tan head. Aromas of chocolate and licorice. Taste the same with some coffee and malt sweetness. Some alcohol heat as the beer warms. Bitter at the finish. Very nice complex ale. Medium to thick palate. Lots of lacing in the glass.

Bottle at The Roebuck, Leek (Titanic) A black colour with a foamy mocha head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, raisin, some molasses, slight cocoa and subtle spicy liquorice. Taste of roasted malts, raisin, molasses, liquorice, cocoa, slight coffee, subtle plum and a little grapefruit. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A spicy, liquorice bitterness in the finish with some cocoa tones. A really nice, full flavoured imperial porter. Tastes strong but hides the alcohol well, great liquorice and cocoa tones too. Tasty.

Pours pitch black with a one finger tan head with good lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, cofee, coco, molasses, dark fruits, sweet malts, and just a little booze. Taste is similar to the aroma with maybe just a little more booze. Has a medium-full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a semi bitter, slightly warming, long finish. Overall, a very nice imperial Porter that is nice on a cool night.

Bottle at home, while typing old rating notes. Pours black, brown head. Nose is intense roasted malts, plenty of sweet liquorice (nice!), citrus hops. Taste is sweetish and roasted, nicely balanced, still some liquorice, cocoa powder, dark chocolate. Very nice indeed.

The first thing I notice is that this porter is relatively thick. It is reminiscent of thin waste oil. The aroma is somewhat easy compared to type. It has a little coffee and a lot of malt flavor. Taste wise it is something special, namely very hoppy, but also has good English licorice in the luggage. Hop bitterness, which incidentally is 85 IBU which is high for a porter, is lengthy and alcohol at 8.7 is lovely warming. It is certainly a porter who is very different from other porters, but I have to admit that it certainly is in my taste. Actually, I was so happy that I wrote a few words of praise for the master brewer. It rarely happens.
