Our latest Brewhouse Rarities release pays tribute to an ancient German beer style that makes the combination of sweet and salty so passť. Introducing Gose, a sour and salty wheat beer brewed with coriander and a Maryland twist. Gose originated in Northern Germany and takes its name from the river Gose, which is lined by mineral-rich aquifers that give the water a natural salinity. To imitate these traditional brewing waters, we added sea salt to the brew, along with coriander to make it true to style. We also added Old Bay to the brew, giving it a twist only Marylanders can provide. On the sour side, we added lactobacillus to the mash and let it sour for a minimum of 36 hours. That sour mash is then added to a larger mash and processed like a regular brew. The lactic acid produced gives the beer a distinct tartness, which is balanced by the saltiness and spice.

Draft. Whereas old bay can be good, I was nervous about this in a beer. Actually was better than I expected, but donít recommend having large amounts... A small sample is enough to enjoy the unique flavor.

bottle @ home thanks to jer. cloudy straw pour with a white head. aromas of lemon, tea, salt, and rosemary. quite herbal. a little bit spicy, too. weird. flavor is fairly tart. water, herbs, and lemon. lots of tea, salt, spice, and a hint of bread.

On tap. Pours a hazy blonde color with a small white fizzy head. Aroma of spices, salt, pepper, and a hint of malt sweetness. Taste is spicy, salty and a little tangy, with notes of wheat.

Aroma of seafood, lemon, orange rind and cleaner. Pours orange and hazy with small head. Taste is awful. Old bay is prominent with sour lemon orange and salt. Wheat undertones help but this is kind of gross.

Unclear medium yellow colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white head. Aroma is moderate malty, spicy, light wheat, moderate yeasty, coriander, salty, oregano (pizza spice), maybe sage. Flavour is moderate sweet and light light acidic with a long duration, spicy, salty, sour. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20121110]

Appearance: Aroma of funk and old bay.

Taste: Sour, salt water, old bay. Interesting.
Palate:Light body.

Summary: Always nice to try a style being brought back. The old bay was really interesting. Donít know if Iíd have this all the time, but not bad.

on tap at the brewery. Very carbonated and very salty. Salty, somewhat tart, lots of spice from the old bay. Itís light and drinkable but very salty. Strange, interesting and probably a good summer session beer...but when I had it the ground was frozen.

Draft at Gingerman. Pale yellow pour. Aroma of herbs, straw, Old Bay. High carbonation, light bodied. The flavor is mostly cooked celery and celery salt from the Old Bay. Nice balance of salt and acid in the finish. Cool beer, but one is enough. Try it with fish and chips or a crabcake.

Tap. Pours lightly hazy gold with a medium, creamy off-white head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is fruity esters, salt, herbs, straw and pils malt. Flavor is lightly salty and tangy/sour, fruity esters and a dry finish. Light body and medium carbonation.

Pours slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of sour malt, wheat, salt, citrus and some spices. Taste is light sweet, light bitter and light sour with a salty and spicy finish. Body is light, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.
