Poured into my favorite drinking glass I was struck with a sweet smell. I can't put a word to it though. Looks thick in the glass, but that could be the darkness of the drink. First sip has a coffee, chocalate muskiness to it. Definatley good in taste, I would like to thank Ervich for the trade for this one.

This is most certainly not a barleywine in flavor, just the alcohol content. It is very nutty and somewhat fruity, with a touch of cocoa in the mix. It's not as smooth as some of the better, well-aged barleywines, but it is very drinkable nonetheless.

Deep dark ruby hue. Big light tan head. Nose of freshly sliced apples. Im not terribly impressed here. Seems pretty dull, yet alcohol is hidden pretty well. Peppery, light fruit, yellow cherries, apples, lack of hops, light chocolate notes, anise. I wouldnt say this is great, but its F.D.'s best by far...

UPDATED: SEP 30, 2003 Pour is a large frothy brown. Color is a deep dark brown. Aroma is understated, a bit of chocolate. Flavor of raisins contrasts quite nicely with roasted malt. Finish is slightly bitter.

Out of a bottle at the 2003 Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival. Very dark with only mahogany hints of color around the edges. Sweet alcoholic caramel nose and almost no head. Some malty sweetness to it and a decent hop bitterness in the finish. An okay beer I guess, but not a good barley wine.
2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 mjmurphy2 (85) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 12, 2003
A poor barley wine, alcoholic, phenolic and unpleasant. Hints of smoke and chocolate are buried under a sickly sourness and chemical vapors.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20 notalush (4173) - Denver, Colorado, USA - JAN 12, 2003
Very deep, amber color, with no head present, but moderate carbonation. Chocolate, malty aroma. The flavor is quite decent, with notes of chocolate and cherries. These flavors, however, seem to clash with the hop character displayed in the beer, and this leaves on odd bitter, metallic finish. A decent, but imbalanced barley wine.
3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 domtom (65) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - DEC 29, 2002
Dark brown, opaque with a fine head. Aroma of cream and malt. Well-balanced flavour, very malty. Good beer but a little bit heavy to my taste.

deep brown colour, no head, strong alcohol aroma, fruity and peppery with nice hoppy notes, smooth, sweet and quite bitter, warming with a dry bitter finish - very good
