Ungstrup (11385), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 23, 2006 A hazy red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has strong notes of caramel, but also light notes of hops and cowberries. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of caramel, but also alcohol, and lesser notes of wood and cardemmome. omhper (10728), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 4, 2003 Bottled. Very dark reddish brown. Toffee nose. Grapefruity hops takes over from there. Very sweet with big crystal malt character. More toffee in a finish with less bitterness than common in US barleywines. Ina barleywine tasting session it wouldn't stand out much, but omhper likes barley wines, and this is good beer. Papsoe (10510), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 8, 2006 (Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours a clear, orangey brown with a creamy, off-white head leaving some laces. Soft aroma of caramel and aroma hops. Quite a full body, sweetish with loads of caramel and a very warming alcohol. Hoppy indeed, but quite a harmonious hoppiness. A pleasant Barleywine, but not amongst the greatest of its style. 220406 Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Apr 7, 2002 Updated: Jul 11, 2003Completely muddled. Terrible structure problems, as alcohol, green apples and poorly extracted malts compete for attention. And where are the hops? Finishes like a durian smells. yespr (6944), Copenhagen O, Denmark Feb 9, 2008 12 fl oz bottle. Pours deep dark red with a creamy tan head. Smooth barley aroma, mild chocolate note. Flavour is smooth caramel malty, a little liqourice hops edge, smooth chocolate and a nice alcohol warmth. Ends with a nice level of bitterness, warming alcohol and smooth chocolate/caramel malt.
