3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark red pour with a thin head. Sour, Flemish notes in the nose, with the standard barleywine brown sugar aroma. Decent flavor of sugar and alcohol, with dark fruit, some roasted malt flavor, and coffee. Nicely complex for a barleywine that gets no respect. I like it.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Flying Dog pub 9/27/06. Pours a dark amber, clear with a thick tan head. Aroma is really strong maltiness with hints of alcohol. Body is thick. Flavor is strong maltiness with some dark fruit and raisins. Finishes very clean. Overall, very surprised....I’ve had this a few times before and wasn’t impressed. Only got this bottle because I was with someone who wanted to try it. Not sure if it’s the freshness or the batch, but very enjoyable, very nice beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma is sweet and candylike. There is little head. The flavor is sweet with hints of grape. There is a nice oaky finish with some alcohol warmth. Not my favorite barleywine but tasty nonetheless!

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Pours dark brown with amber highlights. No head but some carbonation is visible rising from the bottom of the glass. Aroma is candied raisins and sugar with a big dose of alcohol. The taste is very bold and upfront with sweetness and a nasty out of balance hops and alcohol lashing at the end. I love big beers but this ones flavor profile seems totally out of whack. I probably should have let it age for awhile. The mouthfeel is exceptional. Nice and smooth and creamy with a great coating effect. Not a barley wine I will buy again.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a hazy amber. The nose is a very strong cabernet with subtle notes of malt. Comes across the palate with a semi-sweet cabernet flavor with a bitter after taste, your palate eventually adjusts so its not so bitter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a slightly murky deep reddish brown, with close to no head. The nose is mild with hints of caramel, and a dash of hops, and dark fruit. The flavor follows in suit, and masks the alcohol well. Overall a good brew, but fairly different for this style.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Immediately I was alerted to the huge presence of carbonation in this brew. I barely poured out half the bottle before I had to stop and wait for the absolutely huge head to die off. Anyways, decent dark malt aroma, with a little mustiness thrown in. Taste was very malty with little hints of anise and licorice. I certainly was reminded of the liquer Sambuca. The licorice flavors seemed to work well at hiding the huge alcohol presence, and it was masked very well. I didn't think this was 10.5% until about 30 minutes after drinking. Finished with enough hops to give a nice contrast to all the malts. Carbonation was evident in the finish unfortunately. I think aging could do a lot for this beer.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2010 Ahh opened up the snow season with this one, hard to describe it in a delicate manner however I did enjoy it’s inherent complexity during a slow plow through snow soaked roads on the way up to some shred of the pow.
