2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 harrisoni (11025) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - APR 25, 2008
Bottle from Utobeer. Hazy ruby colour. Not sure that many hops really work with the malts which are syrupy nor the alcohol. Bit soapy on aroma. Hot alcohol and then some syrup and some very thing bitterness. Not a great barley wine. After JW Lees Harvest ale 2003, this is a bit uncultured and a bruiser. Hops are too metallic. fruit comes from the syrupy malts. Poor for its style. Would I have it again? No.
1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20 Oakes (10941) - Savusavu, FIJI ISLANDS - APR 7, 2002
UPDATED: JUL 11, 2003 Completely muddled. Terrible structure problems, as alcohol, green apples and poorly extracted malts compete for attention. And where are the hops? Finishes like a durian smells.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 yngwie (10798) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - MAY 20, 2008
Bottle, 2007 vintage. It pours a nice ruby body, clear but hard to see through, with a minimal biege head. More just a broad ring of bubbles actually. When pouring, it’s not hard to detect it’s a barley wine, one can sense that it’s going to be a warming, sweet and hoppy beer. When sticking my nose into the glass, it sends out aromas of sweetish maltyness, dried fruits and dark berries, a cute little licorice scent, some hops, but not very much, and there’s a touch of bread too. In the mouth, the alcohol is very present, but in a pleasant way, due to the sticky sweetness? It has some syrupy qualities in the mouth. There’s also dried fruits and some berries, and a little bitterness from the hops, but it’s far from dominating. Some notes of pine and citrus though. A bready, roasted flavor and some licorice is also found, but that’s just in the background. It finishes rather sweet and malty, with the alcohol warming for a long time, suiting this cold May evening very well. Even though I like my barley wines low on hops, a little bit more wouldn’t hurt. But no problem, the beer works just fine, and gave me a nice half an hour of joy. Be sure not to serve it too cold, it needs some temperature to open up(080520)
