This strikes me more as an Altbier than an English Strong Ale; I guess t’s something about the maltiness, or perhaps the word ’altitude’ on the label. Whichever it is, this is a wonderful example of maltiness run amok. Not much in the way of hops, but that’s fine in this case.

UPDATED: FEB 13, 2006 A very dark purply brown with a lingering, sandy foam. Malty aroma, dried fruits caramel and a blondie (not really chocolate enough for a brownie, but has that similar slightly cake-like maltiness. Fairly rich body. Low bitterness. Not bad.

As stated previously by others not quite what you would expect. Fruity... Toast..? Not one I would cuddle up to the ski lodge fire with.

Starts smooth - quickly slaps your sinuses with some alcohol effervescence. Yeasty malt aroma; dry and bitter finish. Has an awkward off-flavor of ’burnt toast’ or ’musty yeast.’

The winter season usually brings what I think are the shittiest seasonal beers. Surprisingly, I give a good rating to a good winter brew. Bitter but drinkable.

A really smooth beer with a distinctly sweet aroma. Not as good as their Scottish Ale, but an outstanding standby beer (for me) when getting something from this brewery.

Compared to some other winter brews I’ve tried, this one is smoother and better balanced. The nose is malty and sweet, as is the taste. It remains that way til the finish, and then everything pretty much disappears, especially with any food at all. I don’t detect the fruitiness that others have found in this one, only a sweet malty taste. It isn’t a complex as similar brews, but just to sit and drink it’s good because there are no bad notes to the taste, nothing lingering afterwards. I will try others by this brewer.
