Reviewed 12/17/2012. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a dark chestnut color with a good amount of clarity. While the offwhite colored head has a nice texture, it quickly fades into a very thin collar - and isn’t impressive to start with at less than one finger. The body is pretty beautiful, at least. S: Has a definite graham cracker and chocolate vibe to the aroma. When given the chance to warm up, it develops a prune-like character to it. There isn’t much in the way of spicing other than a touch of cinnamon. T: I’m surprised how bitter this is. There is almost no sweetness to the caramel and toasted malts - if there is, I sure as shit don’t notice it. Normally, this is a good thing for me. But this bitterness works against everything else, ruining both the balance and potential subtleties the spicing could have provided. After a while of warming up, some Centennial hops seem to make an appearance after the midtaste, almost as if it’s trying (and failing) to ape SN Celebration in a manner. Not horrible, but everything just seems out of whack, and without any distinctness to any of the flavor notes. M: The finish is dry and astringent. The problem is, it’s not in a balanced manner, increasing the harshness of it. Even worse is the general chalkiness of the feel, which I’m no fan of either. All it does is make the texture feel thicker without really feeling substantial. O: ST’s 2XMAS planted a seed of doubt toward my general dislike of winter warmers. Even if it’s not a great example of the style, this makes me remember why I don’t really care for the typical winter warmer. It feels off for some reason.

As K-9 Winter Ale, bottle from 2014. Flying Dog’s take on the classic English ’winter warmer’ strong ale style. Curious to see how it relates to Cooper’s Vintage Ale of the same style, which I had yesterday evening. Beautifully warm coppery vermillion colour, clear, with a thinnish and fairly quickly breaking, loose, pale beige head. Very malty, sweet aroma as expected from the style: cookie dough, butterscotch, roasted peanuts, caramel candy, biscuit, rhum-soaked raisins, dried orange peel, sweet gingerbread spiciness, dried banana slices, hazelnuts, spicy notes of cloves and black pepper - the feel of being invited to an old-fashioned English banquet with traditionally English winter puddings, plus faint hints of iron and wet paper, but not disturbing. Sweetish taste, banana and orange but in a candied, dried way, raisins, soft carbo, very smooth and somewhat resiny, oily mouthfeel; the malts are showcased here, very caramelly, nutty, toasted in the end but with a delicate sweetness; malty, bittersweet finish, toasted, caramel slipping through, nice late and brief peppery hop bitterness but allowing the malts to fully shine, and then of course there is a warming, rhum-like alcohol glow at the back to finish it off. The hop bitterness lingers for a while after that and the sweetness sticks just a little bit, but not so much that it becomes bothersome. Flying Dog clearly understood the essence of English strong ale and captured it in this bottle with care and knowledge. I would recommend this as a perfect introduction to this old-fashioned style to anyone coming from an American perspective.

Piwo bursztynowe, klarowne. Piana drobnopęcherzykowa szybko opada do obrączki. Prawie nie oblepia szkła. Aromat bardzo ubogi, słodowy z wyraźnym diacetylem. W smaku podobnie, owocowość, słodowość, skotrowana lekką goryczka Piwo przegazowane.

Avena entre los ingredientes. Color cobrizo, bastante limpia. Espuma insignificante. Aroma dulce, a canela. Cuerpo moderado y carbonatacion alta. Agradable sabor, de dulce malta tostada, en medio de un tono alcoholico notable pero agradable. Buena.

Purchased a 6-pack in Baltimore on my trip to Maryland Deathfest. Pours a real deep amber colour with a frothy warm-beige cap, good retention and creamy lacing. Aromas are malty with some sweetness and very light grass. The taste is sweet with fruity notes, caramel malts and some decent hop in the finish, creating a mild dryness. Plums, dates and other dark fruits. Hints of oranges. Not a bad brew, but a little heavy in sugars... especially for such warm weather.
