2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Reviewed 12/17/2012. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark chestnut color with a good amount of clarity. While the offwhite colored head has a nice texture, it quickly fades into a very thin collar - and isnít impressive to start with at less than one finger. The body is pretty beautiful, at least.
S: Has a definite graham cracker and chocolate vibe to the aroma. When given the chance to warm up, it develops a prune-like character to it. There isnít much in the way of spicing other than a touch of cinnamon.
T: Iím surprised how bitter this is. There is almost no sweetness to the caramel and toasted malts - if there is, I sure as shit donít notice it. Normally, this is a good thing for me. But this bitterness works against everything else, ruining both the balance and potential subtleties the spicing could have provided. After a while of warming up, some Centennial hops seem to make an appearance after the midtaste, almost as if itís trying (and failing) to ape SN Celebration in a manner. Not horrible, but everything just seems out of whack, and without any distinctness to any of the flavor notes.
M: The finish is dry and astringent. The problem is, itís not in a balanced manner, increasing the harshness of it. Even worse is the general chalkiness of the feel, which Iím no fan of either. All it does is make the texture feel thicker without really feeling substantial.
O: STís 2XMAS planted a seed of doubt toward my general dislike of winter warmers. Even if itís not a great example of the style, this makes me remember why I donít really care for the typical winter warmer. It feels off for some reason.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle at home. Pours a clear reddish amber colour with a light beige, creamy, medium head. Aroma of dried fruit, cranberries, nuts, wood, caramel, maple syrup, leather and some chocolate. A bit on the sweet side. The flavour has more nuts, fudge and still a malty touch. Sweet and light. Has a silky mouth feel, and a light bitterness. A little boring beer compared to other Flying Dog beers. Is balanced and sweet with a pleasant aroma, but the taste is surprisingly light.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma-delicate, roasted apple and nuts, cinnamon
Appearance-rich caramel orange, average foam, CO2 ok
Taste-classic Doppelbock, roasted not smoked, could be a session beer if your head is strong :-)
Palate-nice bitterness with more share of hops than alcohol, slightly better than Paulaner Salvator
Overall-a good beer but not for me since I can buy Paulaner Salvator almost 8 times cheaper. 355 ml bottle, Drinks of the world Zurich.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Keg, dark brown, toasted malt nose, sweet with burnt caramel, a touch of marmalade, earthy hops but overwhelmed by caramel. A bit too sweet even for a winterbock.

Backlog. One of the standard winter-seasonals that show up every year, never really made an impact with me.
