2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Reviewed 12/17/2012. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark chestnut color with a good amount of clarity. While the offwhite colored head has a nice texture, it quickly fades into a very thin collar - and isnít impressive to start with at less than one finger. The body is pretty beautiful, at least.
S: Has a definite graham cracker and chocolate vibe to the aroma. When given the chance to warm up, it develops a prune-like character to it. There isnít much in the way of spicing other than a touch of cinnamon.
T: Iím surprised how bitter this is. There is almost no sweetness to the caramel and toasted malts - if there is, I sure as shit donít notice it. Normally, this is a good thing for me. But this bitterness works against everything else, ruining both the balance and potential subtleties the spicing could have provided. After a while of warming up, some Centennial hops seem to make an appearance after the midtaste, almost as if itís trying (and failing) to ape SN Celebration in a manner. Not horrible, but everything just seems out of whack, and without any distinctness to any of the flavor notes.
M: The finish is dry and astringent. The problem is, itís not in a balanced manner, increasing the harshness of it. Even worse is the general chalkiness of the feel, which Iím no fan of either. All it does is make the texture feel thicker without really feeling substantial.
O: STís 2XMAS planted a seed of doubt toward my general dislike of winter warmers. Even if itís not a great example of the style, this makes me remember why I donít really care for the typical winter warmer. It feels off for some reason.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a dark amber colour with a small white bubbly head. Aroma - malt forward, not terribly exciting, some toffee, toasted grains. Taste - well balanced bitterness, the crystal malt provides just the right amount of toffee and caramel without going to far. Some nutty flavours and a touch of red fruit. Nice winter sipper but nothing special.

Homebrew taste and smell initially then u get the alcohol burn. Your burps burn a little too... Ok for a cold cold day in the wilderness by the fire

Keg @ Sedona. The pourís deep brown with a small head. Sort of toasty on the nose. A touch of vinous red berry skin. Toffee. The taste is similar. Hot toffee, cherry skin. Cocoa. Mildly tangy on the finish. Full, soft body. Fine carbonation. Good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a clear ruby brown with a light tan head. Aroma of cinnamon, syrup and spice. Taste is dark cherry sweet with cinnamon. Itís also quickly replaced by a firm, but not hoppy bitterness. This bitterness nicely balances the malt sweetness for a clean finish, which masks the ABV and makes it very drinkable for a Winter Special ale.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
355ml bottle, pours clear amber with a medium sized creamy tan head with good retention. Aroma of apricots and caramel. Taste of apricots, caramel, maple syrup and a hint of spices. Light sweetness and medium bitterness. Medium body, creamy texture and soft carbonation. An okay English Strong Ale, but not as spicy as you would expect from a Winter Ale.
