Blimey Kojo you have really knocked my socks off! The smell is an intense sticky toffee aroma only what I can guess that Willy Wonkers smells like. The taste is warm and refreshing and I only wish that I was drinking this now freshly off the slopes by a burning log fire. Amazing truly amazing.

Tap from J Ryans. I’m getting an initial banana and vanilla hit. Middle and back are heavy on the coffee and sweet. Pours black. Low carbonation with lots of lacing.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Thick and dark brown body, thin creamy head that dies quickly and aromas of bananas, chocolate and a little peat. Flavor is heavy with the banana flavor up front and late in the finish with chocolate, vanilla and a little peat in the mid-section. Not bad, but not great.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A: Pours the typical pitch black colored body expected from a stout. Putting this bad boy up to the light yields none of it coming through. The tan colored head is a little disappointing, only two fingers with lowish retention/lacing, but it’s no big deal.
S: There’s some coffee, and good coffee too - but it’s a little mild in its strength. I do smell some chocolate, as well.
T: The strongest flavor here isn’t coffee - it’s licorice. Notes of chocolate, roast, a hint of hops, and the tiniest amount of booze also exist; oh yeah, there’s some coffee, too. As a straight-up imperial stout, this is excellent, if somewhat unbalanced favoring the licorice. As a coffee stout, it falls short. It needs some more coffee character to counteract the roast and licorice; they could support it easily without upsetting the balance.
M: A little thin bodied, but it’s super creamy with low carbonation. The finish isn’t as dry as I expected (definitely not as dry as Founders Breakfast Stout), yet I still get some of the coffee texture on the tongue, so extra brownie points for that.
O: All in all, solid. Unfortunately, solid doesn’t quite cut it next to Founders Breakfast Stout, as it lacks its immense drinkability and character. I hate to make the comparison, but given the quality of FBS, it’s hard not to, unfortunately. Still, I’d definitely give it another try.
