COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

355ml bottle. grass, herbal and citrus aromas. Pours bright copper, with nice white head, some persistance and lacing. Light to medium body and average carbonation. Taste is herbal, malty, bitter, well balanced. Nice bitter finish. Quite enjoyable.

Bright copper colored in the glass with a brief head, and a pleasant, grassy, citrus aroma. The taste is more complex than I expected, and I enjoyed it a lot. The big hops are present, like in any IPA, but there’s also the fruity, nutty flavors I associate with Belgian ales. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Belgian style IPA, but after a few sips I was thinking, oh, I get it. I got it, and I liked it.

Delicious, strong hops and a Belgian yeast strain combine perfectly here. Usually it’s the solid malt foundation that balances out the strong American appetite for hops, but in this case it’s the soft belgian yeast. Yum.

Aroma of fresh apricots with a hint of ammonia. Woody palate. Nice balances flavours of fruit, citrus and bine with a big bitter Belgian flourish. Drinks nice....

Aroma is a wonderful citrusy pine smell. It poured a clear tangerine color with a nice white head that stuck around for a while. The taste is like the smell with a little bit of bubble gum and a slight bitter aftertaste that goes away pretty quick. It really coats your mouth with an oily slick feeling. I really really like this IPA.

Tasted at L’Europe Madrid. Pours a clear golden brown, head reduces to a lacing. Aroma is not as fruity as some IPA and on first taste you see why. Big belgian malts with added spice are the first thing you get with the citrus flavours you expect in an IPA there but not quite as prevalent. Complex and really well balanced. Not too bitter. Good mouthfeel and carbonation. Very tasty and for 8.3%, very easy to knock back. Excellent beer.

Bottle poured into a Dogfish Head ale glass, is that wrong? Dark red color, almost rust with a think white head that disappears to nothing. Up front scent of Belgian hops, nice fruit undertones. Taste doesn’t disappoint, very piney with a citrus background. Some caramel on finish. Great local IPA in my opinion.

Draft. Little to no head. Slight citrus aroma but nothing overpowering. Citrus on the taste, malty undertones. Overall, good example of an IPA without being exceptional.

Bottle. Aroma is bready & light fruit like a Belgian with hops of an IPA. The taste follows the nose, almost exactly. The pour is golden with a brief off white head with a decently long palate.
