Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Nice rich beer with lots of hops and fruit. However, there is a strange smell in the glass after a few minutes. Kind of mettalic - meaty. Carbonation is rather low for my taste, but being Belgian, I’m used to highly carbonated beers.

35.5cl bottle at home (29 XII 2015). A Belgian-style IPA of copper colour with a yellowish firm and vivid foam on top. The nose has some minimal dirt or hay notes, and lots of hoppy fruits and citrus. The taste is full of fruits at the very start, yet almost instantly really, really bitter. Think of a massive Belgian endive boost. You can really depict the sweetish malts, and Belgian yeast. So that is where the "Belgian style" comes from. The brew is of medium carbonation, yet rather sharp, and the alcohol is pretty warming - it indeed is 8.3% ABV. This is an incredible strong bitter ale (or bitter strong ale), not just the standard IPA brew. The ending is oh so long, dry and of the most bitter sensations I ever had: At least it feels like this.

Clear amber pour with a white head. Smells hoppy and malty. Notes of grapefruit, orange, caramelized malts, a bit of honey and piney hops. The taste follows the same notes, with a nice sweet and malty backbone on top of a bitter hoppy profile.

Pours clear and golden orange with a lacing and slight off-white head. Aroma is dry peachy and pinewood hoppy. Peachy and dry pinewood hoppy initial flavoured. Nice caramel malt base to this. Not overly sweet. Good balance. Smooth peachy and fruity dry flavoured into the finish.

12oz bottle from Albert Heijn, consumed on 19-Dec-2015. Clear amber colour with a medium sized white head. Aroma of sweet malt, Belgian yeast, fruit and spices. Medium body and carbonation. Lovely balanced flavour, although a little tart candy on the palate. Sweet malt, tropical fruit, grapefruit, banana, cloves. Sweet with a long bitter boozy finish.

Average carbonation, full body. Sweet and slowly turns into medium bitter finish. One of my favourite IPA and beer too.

Poured from the tap into a snifter. The beer pours a clear light orange color with an off-white medium sized head. the aroma is full of citrus and spices with a good hop mix. The flavor matches the aroma and is pretty good. Overall, a nice Belgian IPA. My first beer from Flying Dog.
