Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Pours clear, dark amber with white medium head. Noticable citrus and banana aroma. Sweet and bitter taste, not the best combination for an IPA but still pretty good. Nice creamy texture with an average carbonation, and lasting finish.

Drinkt gevaarlijk makkelijk weg. Voor herhaling vatbaar.

0.355 l bottle from local AH, best before January 2017 (I assume bottled in January 2016). Clear, golden amber with a medium large, frothy, stable, tan to white head. Fruity-resiny, slightly floral aroma of mango, orange, some grapefruit and pine. Sweetish, fruity-resiny taste of mango, orange jam, honey and some clove, followed by medium long, rather bitter, slightly yeasty finish. Medium body, creamy to oily mouthfeel, average carbonation. Good!

Little bitterness and sweetness. Bitter comes out a little stronger at the end. Not a bad or great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Number 21. Cloudy, deep amber with little head. Citrus hops off-set by some Belgian yeast. Good bitterness and not too boozy.

DATE TASTED: February 20, 2016... GLASSWARE: Duvel oversized tulip... OCCASION: another Blue and Gold dinner well done--congrats to our boy scouts... APPEARANCE: a cyclone of effervescence is unleashed after pouring; a translucent amber orange body... two-finger-thick, uneven, white cloud head settles to a resilient single finger.... sporadic fingers of lacing... AROMA: lemon, grapefruit and orange zest, care of the Amarillo... light, bready air suggests a slight balance... PALATE: surprisingly smooth and creamy--the Belgian influence?--and barely approaching medium-bodied... a tremendously bitter finish... frighteningly drinkable at 8.3%... TASTE: lemon, orange and grapefruit--a trifecta of fruits, with a slight pine undertone... the malts are soft and only negligible... OVERALL: an amped-up Snake Dog, yes--Gonzo? That might need to be reserved for the Imperial Porter... a solid IPA that approaches outstanding, if not for its rather singular profile...

Una gran cerveza, mezcla entre IPA y belga en la que se aprecian los aromas y sabores de los lúpulos americanos sobre un cuerpo maltoso como una buena belga.
