COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Malty aroma, some fruits in the background, spicy. Not the strongest. Pours rather clear with medium sized head. Small lacing. Pretty high bitterness, small sweetness. Very nice aftertaste, alcohol warming the throat. Medium carbonation, medium-high body. Very nice beer overall. It’s a bit more like imperial ipa, than ipa.

Dark golden with a white head - Some malts in the aroma with hints of caramel, some fruity hop aromas - Nice malt and hop flavours with some flowery notes with some bitterness - bitter finish from hops - This was nice

Bardzo dobre piwo. Wpisuje się dobrze w styl jakim zostało nazwane. Belgijskie nuty estrowe i dzikie, a poza tym goyczka na przyjemnym poziomie z przyjemnych odmian chmieli.

Very heavy aroma of hops and and a rich fruity flavor. I did not expect the high alcohol percentage (for this type of IPA). Highly enjoyable.

Very rich aroma of hops and that "Belgian smell" which I guess is wheat, cloves, banana, and other indistinct fruits I can’t pick out. Very nice copper color. Flavor is quite nice.. while my palate can’t quite articulate the specific flavors, I will say it is a nice blend of spiciness, sweetness, and hop bitterness. A very nice beer.

Mooi ambergeel bier met witte schuimkraag. Hoppig en moutig van geur, bloemig en citrus (grapefruit). Smaakt hoppig en minder bloemig dan ik van een IPA gewend ben, grapefruit. Lekkere bittere afdronk. Heerlijke (Belgian Style?) IPA.

fles, mooi label! Kleur amber, met offwitte schuimkraag. Vrij veel schuim. Geur, zeer fruitig en hoppig. smaak: fris en (tropisch) fruitig, zoet. Bitter door de hop. Nasmaak is een klein beetje scherp.

’Belgian-style IPA’ but very American to me. Anyway, a wonderful IPA with a thick, yellow white, dense moussy head with very good retention and a warm, beautiful, pure amber colour with quiet fizz. Powerful aroma of orange peel, grapefruit, bell peppers, white bread, cake, field flowers, vanilla, cava, tomato, rhubarb, overripe mango, soap, tobacco, chicken broth, bourbon and something vaguely, but not disturbingly sulphuric. Crisp, vivid and assertive onset, a basket of exotic fruits overladen with truckloads of citrus, resinous, rounded and full palate, caramelly malts, a subtle vanilla-like sweetishness and lightly minerally, lightly sourish carbo; the finish is impressive, with continuing slick malt sweetishness underlying a very powerful yet elegant, herbal, peppery, pine-needle-like, citrussy hop bitterness, very long and dry but kind of ’juicy’ as well, accompanied by gin-like, warming but subtle and in all well-hidden alcohol. I can’t seem to get enough of this style. But talking about style: though something like ’Belgian IPA’ has gradually come to emerge in recent years (and is already recognized as a different substyle by our friends at Beeradvocate), I had expected something more yeasty and less citrussy, with a more ’European’ hoppiness - so I still fail to see the ’Belgian’ qualification in this. Which is of course not a problem at all.
