Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

330cc bottle. Pours clear orange with off white head. Orange citrusy, a bit piney, tropical fruit, peach, banana. Sweet, caramel and biscuit background. Yeasty notes, reminds me o achouffe. Finish is quite bitter without being harsh.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet’s BU. Best before 23.12.15. Pours clear amber, with a big, foamy, slightly orange head. Tropical fruit and resin flavour. Some Grapefruit, pineapple and malt. Quite bitter. Some sweetness as well. Medium to thick body. A bit warming. Quite soft carbonation. Might be too old.

Aroma: complex citrus notes, some dusty grass, some ethers. Taste: moderate bitterness, moderate to light sweteness. Flavour: grape fruit, zest, fresh lemon, black pepper, some cloves, some yeast. Long bitter aftertaste. Overall this is an interesting mix with hoppy and spicy notes.

On tap@Tilt in Oslo in large tulip glass@approx 7 degrees C. Pours dark, almost clear orange with off white head with ok retention. Aroma of yeast, hops, citrus as in grapefruit, lemon and pomerance. This is also reflected in the taste though this becomes somewhat heavy and does not really hit neither the Belgian nor the IPA tastes for me. Bitter and not too well balanced. No doubt this is an interesting beer and I hope to re-rate a day where I do not hit it in a bar somewhat late at night. But for now, I think it is complex and interesting, but not sufficently balanced to be a great.

Amber with average head. Sweet with fruity hops. Little pine resin. Creamy malts. Quite sweet and not overly bitter for an IPA. Interesting but maybe a bit too sweet.

Bottle from the Kings Tun JDW, pours a deep orange-amber with a lasting white head, aromas of pine, bitter orange, caramel and a little funky horse blanket. Rich and dry-sweet with a faintly sour and dry bitterness. Spicy funky Saison notes and toffee, more bitter orange and a dry alcohol bite. Fascinating!

Bottle. Clear deep golden colour with quickly falling white head. Aroma hops, orange, orange zest, floral. Caramel in aroma. Taste bitter hops, caramel and maybe some yeast. Alcohol in taste. My expectations from taste based on aroma were higher. Bitter aftertaste. Good one.
