COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Another foul-mouthed beer name from Flying Dog. Poured from bottle to standard pint: Pours a nice looking burnt gold with a finger of dense, creamy head. Pretty good lacing and a very active body. Definitely some spicy yeast right off the bat. Citric hops and mild malt backbone. A bit dull, but nicely balanced. I’m digging this one. The spicy yeast character goes great with the highly bitter hop profile. Very heavy stuff, in a good way. Feel is good but the finish is exceedingly bitter - like straight up orange peel bitter going on up in here. It doesn’t detract from the beer but it also doesn’t have me thirsty for another one. Overall, a unique beer. Give it a go.

Bottle at Congress, Longton. Pours amber with a white froth. In your face hop aroma, easy drinking, very hoppy IPA. Not sure about Belgian style, very much a hoppy American IPA.

Pours a copper color with a foamy, long-lasting white head. Aroma is Belgian yeast, floral notes, and citrus. Flavor is sweet Belgian yeast and a bite of grapefruit. Very enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours deep Gold with a White head. Aroma is dominated by the Belgian yeast. Banana notes mixed with fresh American hops. The yeast and hops blend together well enough with a sweet malty backbone but the overall concept is one that my brain has difficulty computing. I love Belgian ales and I love IPAs but I’m not sure about this crossover.

Pours a large grothy white head that mostly diminishes. Body is clear yellow orange, spatkles are visible. Aroma contains light malts (cookie, hay, molasses), moderate hops (flowers, pine, citrus fruits), light yeasts (barnyard, leather) and banana, raisin, apple, cherry, forest fruits and vanilla. Flavor is light acodic, then light acidic and light sweet, followed by light acidic and bitter and finishing in dry bitter. Body is medium with creamy texture and soft carbonation. IPA with hoppy fruits, but also vanilla and banana from the yeast. Ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear amber colour with firm creamy golden/yellow head. Aroma of pineapple (dominates), mango with notes of other tropical fruit. Taste is fruity sweet with dry fruity finish and evident alcoholic presence. Carbonation is low, full body, medium carbonation, hoppy aftertaste with notes of counted fruits. Very good IPA.

To start with check out the amazin artwork by Ralph Steadman. Now, let’s get to the also amazing ale: Pours dark amber with tawny head. Aroma is very intense: Seville oranges, passion fruit, mango, dandelion, pamplemouse, melon, cardamom... Taste is dense and balanced, structured and wide. Very bitter long finish. Best IPA so far.
