COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Aromas of fruity esters, bananas, berries, citrusy and floral hops, toasted biscuits, and some caramel. Appearance is clear, orange-amber, with white head that retains well. The taste is slightly sweet and yeasty, with much of the Belgian yeast strain being initially detected, and finishes with an assertive, yet well-balanced, degree of west-coast-style IPA hop bitterness. Medium-full bodied, conveyed well through thick and spicy carbonation, and finishes with lingering fruity and floral tones. A very refreshing, and very American, Belgian-style IPA.

Mind you, I have had but a handful of Belgian Style IPAs but Flying Dog has my blessing as the best. Raging Bitch is the most recognizable label. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. The head is at about two fingers, fluffy, creamy and a bit off white. The color is a polished orange that could be considered a dark copper. The nose opens a bouquet of fresh sweet bread, delicate florals and fruitful esters. Upon tasting I get a flavor with the likes of caramel and sweet bread almost like caramel cake at the top of the tongue. Toward the middle is a more dull sweetness of the malt lend toward the finish which is a bit funky and sweet with hints of lemon and a bit of candied sugar. The hoppiness is lemony and moderately dry. Fantastic.

Clear amber, white moderate head. Belgian yeast, perfumy fruit, honey, melon on nose. Medium body. Dryish flavour. Not much yeast to be detected. Nectar, melon. Smooth. Bitter grapefruit making it an American one. Very good.

Bottle - Clear deep orange colour, medium and fast fading off-white head. Fruity and citrussy aromas of lemon zest, some peach, plum and apples. Taste is sweet with some caramel, peach, grapefruit, pine, some candy and belgian yeast. Medium body, average carbonation, slick mouthfeel, sharp and long bitterness. Great crossover of IPA and Belgian ale, highly recommended.

Kran w Brewdog Warsaw.

On tap. Amber color, hazy liquid, tan head. Aroma of alcohol, hops, caramel. Taste is medium bitter, medium heavy sweet. Too brutal and harsh.
