COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Aroma: Cedar, pine, rosemary, honey and lemon.

Appearance: Clear amber body with a large beige head. Very light carbonation. Excellent lacing.

Taste: Classic Belgian flavours of yeast, brown sugar, banana and spice. Nice hoppy bite - grapefruit and lemon. Almost sour finish.

Palate: Full body with an oily texture. Soft carbonation fizz.

Overall: This is a really interesting beer - for me, it’s a little closer to a Belgian Ale than an IPA. Is it well balanced? Not really. But there are really complex, unusual flavour combinations here which makes each sip an interesting one.

330ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Clear orange with an off-white head. Aroma is caramel and rather hoppy - peach, grapefruit and pine. Flavour is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and bitter finish. Very samey as other "Dog IPAs".

UPDATED: JUN 11, 2013 Colour: Orange Gold Nose: Very fruity and sweet (mango, passion fruit, banana). The foam head degenerates very quickly. Flavours: Starts out as sweet as the aroma suggets, then the hops kick in and it ends very bitter. No indication of alcoholic content, so beware. Verdict: An almost bipolar ale, in terms of sweet and bitter interchanging. Not my cup of tea, but from a reviewer viewpoint: it is astonishing.

Purchased at the Westchester, Ohio, Krogers = This one poured a slightly hazey orange brew with a citruslike aroma and a finely bubbled tan head of foam. It’s a great tasting IPA!

Tropical fruit and grapefruit on aroma. Bubblegum too after the beer has warmed a bit. Taste is nicely bitter but sour also. Fruity hop flavor on the background. A bit different ipa.

Holy cow this beer rocks! White head with lacing, dark orange color with hops on the nose. The taste is hop forward with with some slight banana and hoppy back end. Wonderful.

I'm just getting into the big American IPA's, heard some great talk about this one so I gave it a try. Pours nice and smooth into a goblet style glass, fairly pale amber color, modest head and a beautiful fruity/tropical aroma. The fruit stays with the taste, which is reminiscent of bubblegum and some banana, thank the Belgian yeast there. Smooth finish and not as much hoppy bite as you'd expect from a name like Raging Bitch. All in all, this is a surprisingly smooth and very complex flavored IPA, with not too much hop assault. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
