Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Wonderfully complex while retaining a vicious bite. Fairly long and complex finish.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2011 Húhhh! Annyi mindent tudnék írni erről a csodáról.

To everyone who worked for or had the privilege to know that mad genius who lived on the Owl Farm. To Ralph and anyone who has seen the flying bats, the flying dogs, oh the insanity of the 1968 Dem Convention, oh oh oh bubba this is the best of the best just like Gonzo himself a twisted masterminded brew from start to finish. Long live Hunter, long live this ale.

Wow, this one was just about perfect. The earthy/fruity/banana Belgian yeast overlaps right on tops of the hops so that the aftertaste is a more subtle bitterness than a classic IPA. Nothing in it is so weird or overpowering that you would get tired of it after a while. I would drink this one all the time, I’ve forgotten how good some of the Flying Dog beers are and this makes me want to grab some more.

Bravo Ralph.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2015 The beer pours a nice layer of soft slightly tanned foam. The beer is very clear and has a beautiful orange color. The smell is very intense. The smell is typical IPA. You can smell delicious hops, recognizable nu theorie distinct smell. It smells devine. This heaven like smell comes back in the taste. The beer has s typical IPA taste, perfect citrusy hop flavored, an almost tong twisting bitterness (in a good way) and a refreshing sweetness, to balance out the bitterness. The aromas are in perfect harmony. The perfect mouth sensation contributes to the perfect taste and smell. The CO2 tingles the tongue, a little message for your mouth. This IPA is definitely a world player.

To start with check out the amazin artwork by Ralph Steadman. Now, let’s get to the also amazing ale: Pours dark amber with tawny head. Aroma is very intense: Seville oranges, passion fruit, mango, dandelion, pamplemouse, melon, cardamom... Taste is dense and balanced, structured and wide. Very bitter long finish. Best IPA so far.

This beer got my attention in the first sip and haunted me for years to come, because I couldn’t get it in Hong Kong. Bold, rich, creamy, hoppy, caramel, spice, banana, etc., etc...it’s not for the weak mind. The sweet malty taste balances well with the bitter hops, and leaving spices, like cinnamon, lingers in the finish.

Mind you, I have had but a handful of Belgian Style IPAs but Flying Dog has my blessing as the best. Raging Bitch is the most recognizable label. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. The head is at about two fingers, fluffy, creamy and a bit off white. The color is a polished orange that could be considered a dark copper. The nose opens a bouquet of fresh sweet bread, delicate florals and fruitful esters. Upon tasting I get a flavor with the likes of caramel and sweet bread almost like caramel cake at the top of the tongue. Toward the middle is a more dull sweetness of the malt lend toward the finish which is a bit funky and sweet with hints of lemon and a bit of candied sugar. The hoppiness is lemony and moderately dry. Fantastic.
