COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Appearance: Pours out an amber-hued, clear body with a goodly sized, clumping, white head. Smell: Faintly sweetish accents to the pale, bready malts followed by a splash of brandy and whiff of aromatic cloves. Then, it’s time for the hops with a vibrant citrusy fruitiness and floral, grassy hints. Taste: Simple, sweet opening with pale malts rounded out with a light breadiness. Abundantly bitter and hoppy, with full tastes of lemons, tangerines, and white grapefruit with marked grassiness. Minuscule astringency. Spicy ground clove character. Hint of white grape-flavored bubble gum arrives rather late. Remains firmly bitter for the dry, warming finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation. Drinkability: For all of the alcohol and IBU’s within, it goes that fairly smooth. While Horn Dog and the seldom seen Barrel-aged Horn Dog still remain the Best of Show winners for me, this new Raging Bitch surely deserves a ribbon of its own.

Pours a light copper with perfect head. A floral aroma is well known with other notes of hops, earth tones, grass and lemon. Well rounded hops and Belgian yeast. A tad bitter with some coffee aftertaste. Great beer!

Bottle. Smell of GRASS, hops, and citrus. Excellent complexity in the taste. It has a lot of hop kick accompanied by good bitterness. It also is creamy and finishes with a sweet syrupyness that doesn’t come around very often. Good blend of Belgian styles and an IPA.

35,5cl bottle at Café Laundromat, Oslo. Pours deep golden with a small white head. Hoppy fruity and malty aroma with citrus, hints of trpocal fruits, caramel and Belgian yeast. Lightly sweet with a nice, quite dry finish. Well balanced and very pleasant. (2012-05-26)

(bottle). A cross between a fine Belgian ale and an IPA and the best of both. Light amber complexion with long-lasting head. Lots of flavor from Belgian yeast and distinct hop signature. Velvety smooth palate. A wonderful beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Heldere amberkleur.

12oz bottle. Slight orange, clear. Really interesting aroma. The phenols and spices from hoeg. but backed with assertive hops. I really enjoy the belgian in this one. But there is a lot of bitterness and green hops. A weird mixture, but imo worth trying. Like mixing fanta and cola, youve got to try it once at least.

Hopheads delight. This isn’t a Belgian-Style, no matter what the label says. Medium amber with a nice ring head and spotty lace. The taste does begin with caramel malt, but it is so quickly dominated by the pine hops that it hardly matters. Not as strong as some IPAs, but as dominant as it gets. Not enough interest for me.
