Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Pours a pale copper with a large head that dissipates quickly. The aroma was the biggest letdown, although it had notes of both styles the IPA should have shown through here as aroma is more important to it. Additionally, there was a (for me)light but very unsavory barnyard odor that went beyond belgian or saison. Could have been a bad bottle, hard to say. Beyond that body was generally light and refreshing. The taste generally featured the matly, complex nature of a strong belgian ale, which was appreciated. Overall, an interesting combination of styles that could have been slightly better constructed.

Bottle. Pours super clear deep orange, almost like Irn Bru with an off-white head. Aroma is pronounced; heavy caramel, malt, orange and mild tropical fruits. I found the hop bitterness to be, while not overwhelming, quite astringent and lingers due to the dryness of the beer, competing and muddling with the spicy Belgian yeast flavours. Strong caramel sweetness, yet quite dry at the same time. I feel if this was an American IPA i would score it only average and if it was a Belgian, similar, and while enjoyable i get the impression its a mix of two lacklustre beer examples. Still, it looks amazing colour wise, crystal clear and has enough novelty to make it a decent drink.

Old notes. Had this several times from tap & bottle. This from bottle somewhere in 2015. Amber color, mostly clear. Off white head with thin layer retention. Aroma’s of sweet fruit, raisin, light resin. Also a bit herbal hops retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, moderate bitter. Medium bodied. Finish is rather bitter and dry. A bit too sweet, but it might have been a slightly old bottle.

Flesje gedeeld met familie. Roodbruin helder bier met matig schuim. Aroma en smaak is zeer hoppig en fruitig met een hint van honing. In de nasmaak komt alleen het hoppige naar boven.

BOTTLE 33 CL. BB FEB-2017. Clear mahogany, creamy beige head. Aroma: crystal malts and moldy fruit - feels like an unfresh IPA. Some less common clove spicy notes. The taste is similar. Moderate grassy-piney bitterness. Looks like it’s spent too much time on the shelves. 6-4-6-4-14=3.4
MAR-2013. BOTTLE 33 CL. Floral, citrus and resiny aroma. Similar taste, abit spicy. 8-4-8-4-16=4.0

Bottle @ home with Muts51. Aroma is quite yeasty with some fruits in there, a bit of sweetness. Looks clear with a dark amber colour and small off head, light carbonation. Taste is quite yeasty but not overly so, reasonably sweet with a light and pleasant bitter aftertaste. Overall, just a very solid beer that I’d happily drink again.

Pours a lightly ruby orange with a half a finger of rapidly dissipating head that leaves a soapy film. Almost a concord grape like nose. heavily effervescent, begins with a sweet grape and raisin taste that then slowly fades into a sharp bitterness in the aftertaste. An interesting sweet/hoppy combination
